can someone recommend a nice backup solution? I'm just backing up some folders like "My Documents" etc. It needs to support encryption since I'm uploading it to my server. Build in FTP support would be nice, but is not required.

What do you use?

7-Zip is also good for backups when using the 7z format because you can add a password, and encrypt the files.

but isn't 7-zip for packing stuff only?

Yeah at packing your backups with tight compression. I personally use 7-zip for all of my backups now all via a batch file so things that would probably take 30 minutes or more to backup manually are done in about 2 minutes tops.

Cobian Backup doesn't do the trick for me. It is to complicated to decrypt an archive and also a pain to set up filters.
However, I came across Abakt ( http://www.xs4all.nl/~edienske/abakt ), which is pretty much a front end that can be used with 7-zip. Still testing it, but seems to be working quite well.

I stumbled upon a multi-platform GPL backup utility called Areca Backupa Java based backup program, seems to have allot it can do. Although I haven't used it so I can't say much more about it.
Looking For Backup Program Not just for single folders
I am looking for a file archiving utility with these restrictions/capabilities:
Completely free to use, even commercially
Partitioning files across multiple archive parts
Capable of viewing all files from first archive when missing remaining archives
Smart extraction, where it will ask me to locate the next archive if not located in the same directory
All but the first of these requirements are filled with WinRAR.
7-Zip was a great tool however it isn't capable of 3 or 4.

Never used one before, but you might try the free Comodo Backup. Their firewall is really good, so I reckon that this can't be too bad either

Forgot about this thread for a while. No dice with Comodo Backup.

I'm still using Abakt ( http://www.xs4all.nl/~edienske/abakt ), which is pretty much a front end that can be used with 7-zip. It offers everything I was looking for.
Also, if someone is looking for a tool to synchronize files, the best program I've came across is FileBack PC. ( http://www.fileback-pc.com ) It's not free, but the home edition is only $25. Well worth it for all the things it can do. And the enterprise editions is a blast.
