I would like to know if Cowon and iRiver Players firmware support Replay Gain. I mean Replay Gain applied in the tags.
And can they read Vorbis Comment from the OGG files?

Especially for the iRiver clix2 (U20)

Thanks for reply.

The only way to get replaygain on a mp3-player is Rockbox. They support several players from Cowon and iriver but for one with flash you'd have to get a Sansa e200. Also take a look at the buyers guide.

iPods have a similar feature to Replaygain - Soundcheck. I think RG values can even be converted to SC. It only does track-leveling though. Not really sure here...

Thats a major leak for the portable players! All the Albums will have a different volum level. sad.gif
So I have to normalize the during encoding to ogg or mp3.

I thought this companies are quite open for new things. Even foobar2000, Winamp and several other software players support it. Is there any (hardware or political) reason why Cowon and iRiver don't support Replay Gain in the tags?
And is there any way we can make Replay Gain more popular for portable players? wink.gif

You could buy an Ipod or use Rockbox.

I think most people (who want to use ReplayGain on portable players) use mp3gain or apply gain in foobar2k.

Some people apply the album gain, and leave the (corrected) track gain in tags for optional use where possible.

Other people do the opposite: apply the track gain, and leave the (corrected) album gain in tags for optional use where possible.

I guess most people apply whichever one they want to use, and then forget about it (though they may leave tags their inadvertantly).

Cheers,
David.

I don't like to use an iPod and Rockbox needs lot more battery power!

But what is with OGG and FLAC? I want to use Replay Gain like it's used by foobar2k (in the tags).

Rockbox only needs more battery power on the ipod, H10, and Sansa. On all other targets it uses less power then the stock firmware.

And anyway, since theres a couple dozen players that will work with replaygain, I don't see the problem. Pick one you like.

Hmmm.... The only problem is I don't want to use an iPod for several reasons. And there is just a limited Rockbox range support for other players.
In the begining I wanted to know if Cowon or iRiver Player support it but that seems not the case.
Are there other Players (names please) which support Replay Gain nativly?

No. You're stuck on Rockbox if you want full Replaygain support.

I think most companies don't support Replaygain because it's too complicated for the average guy (what's the difference to normalization / between album and track gain / concept of tag writing) and it lowers the overall volume quite a bit which can be a problem in portables.

Why should iriver care for Replaygain if the average customer doesn't even know what tags are?

Replaygain is an emerging technology which is unpolished and unstandardized on the interface level. The problem is not the technology replaygain. The problem is the lack of standardized and simplified interface. Users dont see and interact with technologies - they interact with interfaces. Users dont need to know about tags and stuff under the hood - they just need to know meanings and procedures. Replaygain itself is not the usability bottleneck - its just that it is a very new technology with conflicting implementations and underdeveloped and unstandardized interfaces. It lacks polishing on the "surface". It is ready for geeks, but not usable yet for normal users.

well, it's been around for years now and is mostly unchanged from those initial implementations.

i think it's just the lack of understanding the replaygain concept that will be the bottleneck of it's adoption. (or perhaps just not caring?)

anything other than MP3/Itunes is used solely by geeks anyways
