I'm going to come across as an idiot, but here goes:

I need to convert a regular pcm wav file to a wav file using mp3 compression.

I believe I need to use ACM to do this, but cannot get Adobe Audition to use or recognize ACM.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Not sure I am quite with you - WAV is an 'uncompressed' file format , MP3 is a compressed file format . Apples and oranges , so you can't have a wav mp3.

What you can do is take the wav file and 'compress' it to MP3 resulting in an MP3 file.

Open the file in AA

File > Save As > MP3Pro from the drop down

click options if you want to change the settings

click save

That do what you need?

I just re read that - have you been told you need an ACM WAV file? Whats the application?

If we can find out what you need and what for, we can crack it.

WAVE is a container format. It can contain uncompressed PCM data as well as compressed audio like ADPCM and MP3.

It should be possible to create an "MP3 WAVE" by converting the PCM data to MP3 and adding a RIFF/WAVE-Header.

Strictly true of course, the question seemed basic so i broke it down in simple terms

However , i **think** this poster needs an ACM WAV file.

This ACM wav file can have any compressed data within a WAV container, and can be created natively in A Audition.

Its an MS standard in that as long as the codec is installed, MS can open any compressed material inside of the ACM WAV container.

Quite right. Another freeware program to do just that is available here

the latest fhg acm is included in wmp 11. download, install and hack the registry to have the acm working in adobe audition to compress wav via mp3 compression.
