does anybody know if there are firmware updates planned for the IMP 400 ?

If you mean Ogg support, then I believe it is planned. No ETA.

I posted an update to this thread recently. We still need some patience, because implementation of the integer vorbis decoder (Tremor) on the iRiver hardware turned out to be more difficult than expected.
