I know some of the changes between 3.97 and 3.98 will make the sizing diff, but why only with --vbr-new and not old being larger

I did a 3.97 vs 3.98b3 -V0 --vbr-new bitrate comparison with 25 various music tracks.

The results:

LAME 3.97 -V0 --vbr-new, average bitrate 242 kbps

LAME 3.98b3 -V0, average bitrate 251 kbps

(3.98b3 uses --vbr-new by default)

I uploaded the track specific results in Excel format here:

Sorry for the later reply. I understand the difference between 3.97 and 3.98b3 with --vbr-new... but I guess what I'm asking is why do the changes not effect --vbr-old in 3.98b3. Sizes from 3.98b3 --vbr-old are on par with 3.97

...maybe because they didn't change the old vbr routine??? that would be my guess lalala.gif
