Hey everyone. I recently started fussing with mp3gain, and while it seemed to work without too many problems, I've noticed that the volume will suddenly dip at times, and then later ramp back up. The volume doesn't seem to dip at a given point in a track...I can track back after the volume dips and the volume might still be low, or it will be back up and won't dip at the same point. It's pretty annoying and wasn't a problem before I messed with mp3gain. Any help in the matter is GREATLY appreciated, as I searched the forums already and didn't find what I was looking for.

For reference, here is exactly what I'm using and what I did:

playback: winamp
replaygain: mp3gain and aacgain

I have a collection of mp3 and m4a files. At first I ran mp3gain on my entire library (album gain on whole albums and track gain on tracks which are not from complete albums). Set everything to 95 dB (yes I know that's high, but 89 is too low for use in my car). Of course, I noticed that the volume of my m4a files didn't change, so I went back and read up on aacgain. I downloaded it, renamed it and put it in the mp3gain folder so I could use the gui and fix all my m4a stuff. I ran aacgain on my entire library, assuming it would have no effect on my mp3 files (since mp3gain didn't do anything to my m4a files). Everything seemed to be in order, but I get the volume dips.

Another interesting note: the replay gain data for the mp3 files doesn't show up in the ID3 tags, but it does show up in the m4a tags. However, the data in the m4a tags doesn't agree with what shows up in the mp3gain gui.

Again, any help in the matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

mp3gain and aacgain apply a direct modification of the data, and doesn't expect any other operation from the player. If you play the same part several times, and the volume is different, the problem can only be outside the mp3/aac file.
Do you see winamp lowering the volume (in any of its visualization modes/plugins) ? do you have extra hardware (amplifier, power speakers...)?
