Ok, this is my first post on hydrogenaudio.
Im really into psychedelic music, since im rather...wierd.

So like...Id really like to do one of those choose your top 5 songs, but they must be trippy.
Im sorry to say Pink Floyd is only trippy the first time round; NO, metal band's DONT make trippy music, and no goa/psy-trance (that stuffs rubbish IMO). But yet again thats my opinion. So post anything you want...

My top.5 are:
i) Red Sparowes - Millions starved and became skinnier and skinnier while our leaders became fatter and fatter
ii) DJ Hooligan - Hear you now (Grand Chillas mix)
iii) Buffalo Springfield - Expecting to fly
iv) Hook the Captain - Take me away
v) Chris Vrenna - Elf Song

These songs may not be classified as specifically psychedelic, but never the less they trip me out.

So basically, leave your top 5 "Songs that trip me out"
JohnHenryBonham
James Marshal Hendrix - 1983 ( A Merman I Should Turn To Be )

The Beatles - I am The Walrus

The Who - I Can See For Miles

The Rolling Stones - The Lantern

Ten Years After - 30,000 Miles Beneath My Brain
TREX6662k6
I find Minimal Techno quite trippy.
Stephan Bodzin - Daytona Beach got me in to the genre.

DJ Shadow - Fixed Income too, apparently.
Lyx
My entire collection is about psychedelic music (some more, some less) and you are asking me about picking 5 songs?!? According to which criteria? Psychedelic and trippy are broad terms which can be achieved in many different ways in many different styles.

A question as broad as this may make sense for people, who dont have much experience with psychedelic music, bot for more resourceful people, its similiar to asking "tell me 5 electronic music songs".

Ah, whatever: http://www.last.fm/user/lyxar/

Its really down to opinion. Unless that artist happens to "specialise" in the genre...psytrance, psyambience, trip-hop. Even then it can still be down to opinion

Nice taste in music you got there Lyx

Ok, heres the situation. A millionaire movie-producer is making a movie about the adventures of a schizophrenic, who takes LOTS of acid. The film is shot in 1st-person. Your job is to choose 5 songs that fit the mood. This means, the songs must be so far out, yet simple in structure.
Basically, try to reverse engineer the artists state of mind during the writing of the song. For instance, when I try to put myself in the shoes of Buffalo Springfield whilst he was writing Expecting to fly, I find myself surrenderring to a haze of confusion, isolated in a world so bizzare, and Im trying to communicate back to reality via song.

Does that make sense?

Does that make sense?

Well, the main criteria which was added, was that it should fit as background-music of a movie. Besides of that, since i have no clue about the mood and style of the movie, i would have no clue what to pick. The problem is that what is called "psychedelic experience" isnt even tied to drugs, but can be experienced without substances as well - if you would classify "emotional" and "conceptual" as "styles of thinking", then psychedelic/semantic would be one as well - thats how broad this topic is. Imagine you would tell others to pick "5 emotional songs for a very emotional movie" - thats how broad your question is. For giving an impression of all psychedelic musicstyles, 5 is way too less, since there are more than 5 styles.... and for giving specific music tipps, the criteria is too broad. So, i would say make up your mind - do you want an introduction into the entire psychedelic music world? Then 5 songs is not enough. Or do you want something specific? Then define in more detail what kind of mood and experience you are looking for.

The Doors - The End

Wow, outta those last 2 posts, i can say I only recognise 2 artists: procupine tree and the doors. I dont find either of them too trippy, but then again, like trex said its really a matter of opinion. I respect your opinions, but theyre not quite what I had in mind.
If this post is too confusing, Im sorry, Im not 100% of sound mind.

To Lyx: Please dont take that movie thing literarily. I was trying to give a more accurate guideline, but Im sorry if I mislead you. The schizophrenic and taking acid part was just to emphasize the extent of trippyness.
If you could hear those tracks I posted in my first post, then they would give you an idea of what I was trying to ask. They are not of the psychedelic genre, but nevertheless I find they throw me into a tranced state of mind. Strangely enough, I cant hack listening to the real psychedelic genres like goa and psytrance

How about some krautrock?
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=17
Canar
AFX - 125BPM (a remake of 808 State's "Flow Coma")
Squarepusher - Steinbolt
Underworld - Juanita/Kiteless/To Dream of Love
Chemical Brothers - Electrobank
Orbital - The Box

They're mostly quite old and venerable electronic dance music tracks. These are the favourites of mine that have lasted the ages.

My DJ sets focus on various sorts of acid/psychedelic electronic dance music. You might find them interesting if you're looking for psychedelic music.

None of these tracks are goa/psytrance, in case you're wondering.

Can do some weird music, quite trippy IMO
mochinushi
I seem to strive alot towards this kind of music, i guess it helps me concentrate on doing one thing for hours and hours into the night, like programming and webdesign. I usually get most work done in the night with my headphones turned up loud...

Dj Shadow - Mutal Slump
Chemical brothers - Elektrobank smile.gif
Run DMC - It's like that!!! biggrin.gif (maybe not really trippy but a extremely catchy tune anyway)
Dj Shadow - Entropy (It's got a really heavy beat that almost puts me in total trance...)
DJ Shadow - Fixed Income

I like Dj Shadow alot, not sure what his genre is thou, is it trip-hop?
Sunhillow
Thanks for this link Roetoes!

One of my psycedelic favourites is "Set the control for the Heart of the Sun" by Pink Floyd.
Another one is Nipponjin by Far East Family Band
Gtr~Mike
I'm not really up to date on the "psychedelic" genre but having an older brother born in
1950 and who was head long into all things music including the "Psychedelic" and "Ominous"
rock scene like early Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin I cant offer songs but a few obscure
but relevant Psychedelic bands, and some not so obscure, and maybe borderline "Psych".

Most of this is part of the California Haight-Ashbury scene and I do believe one of these
bands did a Peter Fonda movie soundtrack for "The Trip".

..The Byrds
..Moody Blues
..Electric Flag
..Quicksilver Messenger Service
..The Deep
..Strawberry Alarm Clock
..Capt Beefheart
..Status Quo

It is impossible to find alot of these artists "rare" albums today but I do remember seeing a
few of the rare albums sitting in my living room as a kid. My brother and his friends would
at times drive from San Diego to as far as New York or Florida to see many of the 60s and
70s bands.

It really is amazing thinking back to a time when who are now considered "Legendary"
bands were very accessible to fans by playing small intimate venues.

Sorry if this got off topic and was of no real help.

slks
Pink Floyd - Flaming (mono mix)
Aphex Twin - Fingerbib
Of Montreal - So Begins Our Alabee
The Flaming Lips - What is the Light?
Boards of Canada - Dawn Chorus

Flaming especially. Wow, that song is amazing. You'll want the mono mix though, the stereo one is missing reverb and other effects that contribute greatly to "trippiness".

David Torn - The Others OST

QUOTE
"David Torn, if that is in fact his real name, is a genius. Listen to this music in the dark. You will be transported into the film quicker through his music than by watching the film with the sound turned off. Tablas, ouds and guitar feedback. Synthesized Tibetan monks and Bulgarian women. This is what David brought to the table. He's not from around here. David was sent from the future to drag the past into the present tense. I don't know how he drives a car and lives. Maybe it's the only time he follows the rules."

OMG, how can you be speaking of psychedelic music my dear. TRIPPY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PSYCHEDELIC. Trippy is subjective (what you feel) and psychedelic is an adjective and a genre.

Pink Floyd is one of the most psychedelic rock bands ever for many obvious reasons I can't be asked to write all down.

Yeah metal bands may not sound trippy YOU. (good 4 you). But METAL can be goddamn PSYCHEDELIC: stoner, doom, space, drone, prog, alt........ eg: Kyuss, TooL, Black Sabbath..... (so many)

GOA and psytrance are "just" the most modern form of psychedelic music. Not only is it an extremely vast and multicultural genre but is also one of the last LIVE psychedelic scenes today. Goa music festivals and parties are the only places you will find a real psychedelic spirit, and thats more than trippy mate, its an experience.

Psychedelic music is about open-mindedness and altered states of consciousness, so please open your ears and be a bit more receptive and you might dig it sum day!

btw:

_Led Zep
_Black Sabbath
_The Doors
_pink Floyd

(if the doors aint trippy.....my o my....)

Peace

I've just discovered another psychedelic, trippy band from the late 60's:
The United States of America.

Invincible yet.
devblixt
psychedelic!! The Sex Pistols are in no way psychedelic, nothing they sing is psychedelic at all, not even close.
I'm thinking like the wall by Pink Floyd and in-a-gadda-da-vida by Iron Butterfly among a million others

Check out this band. The pillbugs are a mix of psychedelic rock and pop, can be compared to badfinger or xtc.

Their latest cd, Buzz for Aldrin, is so far their best work. I'm not 'endorsing' the band commercially or anything, this is just a fantastic release and its even better than their earlier stuff which is terrific as well. They don't use any loops or samples or digital fx. i.e. orchestral sections are done by real people.

That is an excellent choice my friend. I bought that album the week it was released and still have it.
It is the true sound of "psychedelic" music from those days.
I don't know how hard it is to find nowadays, but if you can find it, I highly recommend getting it.

Here's a link to some good info on it:

Wow! I might have to get that CD. There's a bunch of songs on there that aren't on the vinyl. Thanks!

Also, here's a pretty good internet station that plays psychedelic music from the 60's.
