Full Version: What's the fastest way to batch convert ogg to mp3?

Right now I'm using lamedropXPd on the default settings.
The audio is conversation so the bitrate shouldn't matter.

Is there anything better?

Um... no. You are transcoding (please follow link) from one lossy format to another, which means that you are losing even more quality and the bitrate does matter. Do you have a good reason to convert from Vorbis?

If lamedropXPd will convert from Vorbis to MP3 then I can't see you'll find anything easier.

You won’t really find any difference in speed from one app to another if they’re all using LAME with the same settings.

You’ll save yourself a little manual work, though, if you use an app that copies the songs’ tags as it transcodes. It’ll save you from having to re-type them later.

When you transcode to MP3 there will be some loss in quality, but if you want to minimize that loss then convert to a higher bitrate MP3, say double that of the ogg files. If you don't mind some loss in quality then you could go to a bitrate similar to the original, but listen to some converted files before you decide.

I'd discourage transcoding in general, but....

1. If you must have MP3 files *and*
2. If you find nothing wrong with how the transcoded files sound

.... then I don't think there's much of a problem, as long as the transcoding is transparent or near-transparent. wink.gif

Which brings us to the question, why do you need MP3 files anyway..? Maybe there's a way you can keep the original oggs and be happy..?
