No. Quality should not be affected.

The --nogap switch is supose to make gapless playback of mp3-files possible; HOWEVER:
The --nogap switch was never finished and is very experimental and unfinished.

# Mark Taylor:  More work on --nogap

It is not mentioned further and from an old discussion on www.audiofora.com it was stated that no developer have wanted to develop this switch and that it has nasty known bugs.

Hi,

I once asked Mark Taylor about the --nogap feature on the lame-dev mailing list. Here's the mail archive link:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.p...5&forum_id=5500

here's Mark's reply:

As far as I know, it works.  I put it in a while ago, but it
has only been lightly tested.  So you should encourge
the braver users on HydrogenAudio to give it a try and report
problems.  An alternative is to modify a decoder to make use of the
padding & delay fields in the Info tag.  This will have the
advantage that nothing special is needed to create the nogap
mp3 files.

Mark

Of course newer formats like Ogg Vorbis do handle the nogap feature much better.

thank you for the info, as im doing backup i decided to drop mp3 and go with flac biggrin.gif then i can just use john33's great oggdrop to transcode biggrin.gif

Vorbis encoding doesn't handle gaps better than Lame. Delays are stored, it's the same thing.

The difference is that everyone is using a Vorbis decoder that is reading those values in order to trim decoded output.
The same thing could be achieved with mp3 is there was decoders supporting it.
