You could try
winamp
mplayer
and I believe vlc might have the capability you are seeking.
great, thanks. i already have vlc but i never thought of using it for this. not much of a winamp fan but i will also look into mplayer, especially on my debian machine.

i've been using "media player classic" which is great because it loads really fast and it doesn't have all the problems real player has but i can't get it to open up my old bookmarks or by typing in urls (it only works by clicking). any ideas on this issue (or on another alternative)? thanks

i figured out how to do this, in case anybody is interested:
-copy the urls from the realplayer favorites onto a notepad file
-go to any shoutcast/real player stream and save the link onto your desktop
-create copies of that saved file
-open the file with notepad and substitute the url from your real player favorites and save
-once the file's been saved, it can be renamed and opened from MPC and added to the favorites list
