Hello: I'm currently using lame 3.97 with all2lame, and have just begun experimenting with tag.exe

My question is this, is there a way to have tag.exe place the LAME version & settings info into the comment field?

So the comment field would look like this:
LAME 3.97 -V1 --vbr-new

or

LAME 3.97 -V2 --vbr-new

It would be ideal if tag could automatically pick up the settings for LAME from all2lame. I use V2 for radio edits of a song, and V1 for LP version, Instrumental & Acapella.

When I use iTunes-LAME it automatically does this for me, but my mac is mad slow.

Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

The VBR encoding info you're after is now stored in the LAME tag (a.k.a. the Xing header), there mainly to assist VBR playback & seeking. Most tag editors aren't aware of it and some that are only seem to access it for Fix VBR Info type operations. Foobar2000 (for Windows only) shows that info and it's almost certainly possible to access it.

From a quick check of foobar2000/right-click context menu/Properties:
The "Metadata" tab shows the normal tag info, and the "Properties" tab shows the 'General' section including:
Duration, Sample Rate, Channels, Bitrate, Codec...
CODE
Codec Profile  MP3 VBR V2
Encoding       lossy
Tool           LAME3.97
Tag Type       id3v2|id3v1

Foobar2000 (fb2k) is very good at letting you access metadata by variable names using IF-THEN-ELSE statements and so on, so I dare say it's possible to compose something in masstagger to copy and format the information you want into the Comment field, if you have access to a PC running Windows, which I guess you do, if you're using TAG.EXE. You can probably adapt something you find in the foobar2000 Wiki on this site to suit you.

Tag.exe cannot automatically pick up the version and settings from the MP3.

I certainly don't intend to add the facility, but others could.
