Windows explorer (xp) seems to display the bitrate in the first frame header. Is there a way to make it to display the average bitrate? Or is there some software plugin? Or is there some software that have table listing of all mp3 files (in a folder) that shows the average bitrate?
Thanks!

I guess most of the people here wouldn't need it, as they may use fb2k which can show the av. bitrate e.g. in columns ui listview.
I think microsoft does not play a role when it's about vbr. They (afaik) didn't even understand vbr bitrate display in vista.
If you use totalcommander:
http://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/MP3Info.htmlI don't need this, but it says it has vbr support. mp3tag or encspot may also be options.

Q: Why does WMP show the wrong time for Variable Bitrate (VBR) MP3 files?
A: [From Zeb] 'It is due to whether or not the TLEN (Total Length) field was set appropriately in the ID3v2 version 3 or higher tag when the file was encoded/ripped. If it is set properly, the length shows fine. If it is not, WMP will sample the bit rate of the first few frames and determine the length that way (and with VBR files, it can be inaccurate because of the nature of VBR).
I use foobar with LAME, and mp3directcut, mp3trim for some direct editing. It looks like TLEN is never set.
1. Is the above statement valid?
2. If so, is there some software that can set TLEN correctly after encoding?
Thanks!
Moderation: Fixed link and tags.

Well, LAME 3.98b5 should set TLEN when adding ID3v2 tags.
Do mp3directcut and mp3trim update this field after processing input files? I don't know.

Really?? I always thought that the bitrate display on windows explorer was the average bitrate of the file!

Are you sure?
He's right, it isn't the average one. Install the AudioShell extension I linked to above, which heavily expands the shell's ability to deal with metadata.

Does it need a special switch? I have not tried beta for a while.

No, you only need to specify some ID3 tag like --ta "Here I am" and force the addition of ID3v2 with --add-id3v2 or --id3v2-only.

I will give it a try. I doubt mp3trim update the TLEN tag. It's quite old.

I now have AudioShell installed properly. However, it gets quite a few files wrong. For example, it shows one VBR 24kpbs as 8kbps.
Is there some tweaks for AudioShell? Or it just can't handle all cases?

I've tried all 3 of them. None of them tell if it's VBR or CBR.
Audio Identifier traps some key stroke e.g. ctrl-S. I can't find a way to disable it. Like Audioshell, it also got a few files wrong (VBR 24 reported as 8kbps)
EncSpot has no unicode support
Mr QuestionMan report BitRate correctly, except I can't tell if it's VBR or CBR. I guess I have to live with it.
Someone mention foobar2000 can do this. I don't see that in the play list. How do I configure it?

I did not get to that part as my files are in unicode. Do you know if there is a Unicode version?
Thanks!

According to
this thread,
DrTag should be able to do this.

dBpowerAmp has a shell extension for all audio files you add support for. Might be worth a try.
