Full Version: Re-brand aoTuV Beta 5 to aoTuV Release X.X

Given that aoTuV Beta 5 is stable and is now the recommended encoder, I think that Aoyumi should consider re-branding aoTuV Beta 5.

Many people may hesitate to use the current encoder because it is a Beta. Changing the name to reflect the stability and quality of the software would eliminate some of the confusion. A Re-Branding would clarify the relationship between aoTuV Release 1 and aoTuV Beta 5.

Any feedback?

Isn't the Lancer version the exact same, only faster? If so, why isn't it the recommended encoder? Can't the speed optimizations be merged into aoTuV?

Well, I'm using aoTuV Beta 5 in its Lancer incarnation all the time and I really don't care how is it called. This is perfect encoder to my taste and renaming it will change nothing, just could confuse the users. (IMHO)

I'm with Oliver, the aoTuV beta or rc or Lancer names are confusing and that does not help ogg to become more popular. But I think it's not Aoyumi who can rebrand. Who can? Can there be soon an updated encoder with Aoyumi's tuning integrated?

My interest in ogg vorbis is growing because more and more portable players support it natively and I have done a lot of ABX with ogg q4, lame v5, v4 and v3 and Nero Digital+ at q0.40. I'm impressed about ogg quality at q4 and q5 especially considering its (as it seems) rather inactive development for a long time. I read also on HA there's room for improvement.

He can. aoTuV is not an official Xiph.org development, so Aoyumi can brand his versions whatever he likes best. Just like he did with Release 1 (formerly known as Beta 4.51).

Sorry, I was referring to an official release. Parallel or spin-off versions won't do good to get more popularity.

I saw the updated libVorbis version but I missed the aoTuV one released on RareWares. But honestly, releasing
  • Oggenc2.84 using libVorbis v1.2.0 and
  • Oggenc2.84 using aoTuVb5
is so confusing. Only the frequent HA visitors know which to choose (and maybe not even all of them).

I agree, all these betas and alphas are not friendly to new users which Ogg Vorbis need to gain.
It would be great if Aoyumi and Lancer developers merge their versions and a stable version is born.
