From time to time, my ipod freezes. I have held down every button
in the attempt to wake it up its stuck in between menus.
Since the ipod has an internal battery, I can't pull that out.
I plugged into the computer. It still remained undetected.
Any suggestions besides merely letting the battery run out?

Try center button + menu -- hold it for 5 secs.

From the Apple website to reset the iPod:

1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Worked for me!

Thanks for correcting me (6 to 10 seconds).

Key thing is toggling the hold switch.

The key is that the hold switch is not on. They include that step to ensure that you have the hold switch off. If you just pick up your iPod with the hold switch already off and hold menu and select, you will find that the iPod will reset.
