Now there is a grass-roots following for "lossless" digital audio formats, or those that do some size-shrinking without losing sound quality.

Read the rest on the International Herald Tribune's website.

Today I stepped into a trendy 2nd hand store. They love vinyl , old amps, etc. The very old speakers were positioned in a very weird non-stereo position giving a very broken soundstage. I realised that a lot of detail is missing that i'm normally used to, so I stepped close to one of the speakers and they were playing riders on the storm. What I heard was a blanket noise / pops drowning or smoothing out the cymbals, vocals etc. On quite parts and between track changes it is totaly unacceptable to me and I'de take 130k lossy anyday.

So much for this audiofool warm analouge crap. The noise artifacts are 'warming' the sound.

That article was better than most I've seen.

The only reference to that silly nonsense was in parentheses, to which they added, "But that's another story."

I think it's funny how shorten (a codec with historical significance) was thrown in there as an afterthought.

It always fascinates me how people can write an entire article on something that can be said in a few short sentences. Still, it was a fun read (which is part of my fascination).

You're saying that was a vinyl recording, right?

The average record is going to sound worse than the average CD or MP3. Vinyl fans like to compare pristine, well-produced, records to CDs and MP3s. Most records are 30 or 40 years old, and in less than perfect condition. I haven't heard a new pristine LP in many years!

Most lossless fans are not playing vinyl records. They are choosing lossless digital over lossy digital.

And, Riders On The Storm has intentional rain-noise sound effects. laugh.gif

The article recommends Hydrogenaudio as a source of information. That's a good thing.

It was a nice read but that article could have been summed up in about two sentences. They did fail to mention people like me who have both a lossless and lossy library. I have a lossless library for archival purposes only and a lossy library for portable listening, listening to music in my car, and listening to music on my computer. I also use the mpeg-4 AAC lossy audio format and the Apple lossless format so I guess I am really in a niche audience.
