Full Version: What Audio Interface should I get?

First off I am looking to do some recording. I think I would only require one output/input, since it's mostly a solo project. My price range is about $100. I don't know if I need to post more, I'm just looking for the best quality (within the price range) for recording stuff onto my computer.

All depends on what you want to do...

Do you need a mic preamp?
GotRice1UP
I was thinking of plugging in a condenser mic to the Audio Interface and have that hooked up to the computer preferably USB.

Well, for PCI, the E-MU 404 would fit the bill. Take a look at PCI or USB offerings from E-MU and M-Audio. I think it would be hard to go wrong with anything from them within your price range. I'm not sure but PCI may get you better value at that price range.

I'm not sure I want a PCI Card. Also I was shopping around on musician's friend and found these.

Which one is the better of the two?

Look at the Juli@ or the emu 1212. A tad bit out of your range, but well worth the extra money.

The Audiophile USB, like all Audiophile versions, is line level input only. You will need a microphone preamplifier between the microphone and the soundcard input.

The Fast Track USB has a microphone preamp but not one suitable for a condenser microphone. Those require phantom power (except for certain more specialized types), which is not provided by the Fast Track.

Also, the Fast Track’s microphone preamp has only 45dB gain. This can be adequate for a rock singer with the proper microphone, practically in his mouth, practically screaming at the top of his lungs, but I’ve seen many posts from people with this type of preamp complaining that their microphone input is hardly hearable. The preamp and microphone must be reasonably matched to each other.

For just a little more than your current budget, the Emu 0202 USB will do a very good job; better still is the Emu 0404 USB for $200. Both are USB 2 only.

The Emu 0202 does not provide phantom power, thus it is limited to dynamic microphones and others that do not use phantom power -- unless you use an external phantom power source for the microphone(s).

Some friends of mine have been trying to break into the Pro-Audio market. To this end, they've brought in a line of equipment (PreSonus) to accompany their recording studio.

One piece that I have purchased fits exactly what you want, except for price (and possibly interface - uses Firewire). I've bought a Firebox from them, it works like a charm for what I want it for. Maybe you could find something used?

Condensers sometimes allow battery power (inside the mic) as an alternative to phantom power. And cheap ones may only allow battery power and not phantom power.
Probably at a low budget you will be using a battery powered condenser. In that case just get a sound card with a preamp e.g. AndyH-ha's suggestions. For these microphones 45db will be more than enough.

Just like to thank everybody for their input.

I ended up buying the E-MU 0202.
