Hi!

Looking to transcode some MP3s to OGG, however I can't find an application that will let me use state-of-the-art ogg encoder?

Like, I followed the wiki guide on EAC+Vorbis and the results are satisfactory, using Oggenc found on RareWares.

Right now the problem is, I wanna transcode, not rip, so how to use oggenc? (as far as I know it uses only lossless sources as input)

The recommended software on the wiki seems to do the job, but they all include a compiled-themselves version of vorbis lib (apparently, don't know for sure), so it means I'd be using something not... "recommended". crying.gif

What can I do or what can I use? Something that lets me specify an external encoder like EAC but for transcoding?

Thank you!!!

foobar2000 can.

Warning may be turned off in advanced settings.

BTW, are you know the transcoding from lossy to lossy generally is a bad idea?
JensRex
Don't transcode.

I gotta ask why??

You realise, that if you start out with a lossy MP3 at any bit rate OGG will not increase the sound quality even at the highest bit rate. An MP3 encoded at 32kbs will sound like an MP3 at 32kbs even reencoded at OGG -q10. There is no way to return sound quality once it has been removed.

But if you feel the need, use any decoding program to turn your MP3 to WAV, then reencode with OGGEnc. EAC has a decrompress function...

Seriously, though. It is not recommended, and if you do, please don't "share" those files.

iGold, that's exactly the problem. I know many applications can do it but as I said, they all use some custom build and I wanna be able to use a recommended one or current one (e.g sticky in this forum).

tawd, thank you. It seems like a long process (wish could skip it myself even if the transcoder would be making it on-the-fly), but then at least sound like a good idea. Will try the decompress function on EAC.

Did you try foobar2000? You can use any command line encoder for any format you want to convert. You even can decode mp3 as intermidiate 24 bit wav for oggenc2.exe (Ogg Vorbis supports not only 16 bit sound). For foobar2000 it's better to rename oggenc2.exe to oggenc.exe and use predefined settings for Ogg Vorbis.

http://foobar2000.org (don't forget to install all components or at least converter).

Oh I see what you mean now.
Yes thanks, I'm looking forward to make the switch from winamp to foobar2000, will try decoding and encoding on it then.

Thanks!

I would also suggest foobar2000. And I think that OmniEncoder is a good choice too.

But transcoding only makes sense if the resulting file will have much lower bitrate then the original, e.g. MP3 192 kbps to Ogg Vorbis 96 kbps for use in a portable player.

You can do it with the winamp transcoder. To use the latest version of aotuv all you have to do is replace vorbis.dll in the winamp folder.

Personally I use dBpowerAmp with the lancer build of oggenc2 aotuv b5 smile.gif No temp file needed for me.

Speak for yourself. There are situations where other bitrates make sense.

I would use converter in Foobar200 works very well and if you have dual core PC it will start encoding 2 files at once, so it is relatively quick.
