Full Version: Renaming utility

Does anyone know of a freeware renaming utility either preferrably with a GUI, however a DOS window'd app will do that can recursively look into hundreds of directories and properly rename well over 15,000 files from for example:
The Quick Brown Fox.txt
to
TheQuickBrownFox.txt, or The_Quick_Brown_Fox.txt

I need such a program because my mother has 1000's of sewing designs on a separate partition on my system that need to be archived onto a CD-R, and my two CD writing software packages belch about the filenames. Archiving in RAR, ACE, etc., is not an option since the files need to be accessable from the CD.

1-4a Rename looked alright and all but having to email the author, and with email me plastered all over the program resulted in the ultimate two fingered solution of Shift+Delete.

Now RenameFiles is nice. It was able to assist me in renaming the 1000's of files in what seemed no time at all, compared to the days upon days it would have taken to do manually.

Are any of these renaming utilities drag-n-drop?
Cos I've tried some renamers, but most of them don't support dragging and dropping, thus u r forced 2
browse for files all the time, which is tedious if u need 2 rename loads of files.

If you're using a utility that has a path window and still want's you to use the slow browsing window you could always have Explorer open in the background and CTRL+C the dir name from Explorer and then CTRL+V the dir name into the program.

Hi!

I think the best one is:
Magic File Renamer.

Time ago I compared several renaming utilities and this was
the best for me... but it's only my opinion tongue.gif

And version 5 comes with a lot of improvements...

Take a look to it.
Best regards.

You could also check out "Tagger" - beta announced in the "news" section on HA. Supports drag'n'drop, nice GUI, allows simple to sophisticated rename of files and rename of tags. Its a GUI frontend of Tag DOS utility. Just my ¥2.
