Full Version: How Do I Test A Line Out Socket is Working?

I've bought an old Casiotone 701 and I want to take its line out to my desktop computer.

I've got a 6.5mm mono plug into the casiotone with a 3.5mm stereo to mono adapter behind that and then a stereo cable running to the stereo (?) line in input of the computer.

I can't get any reading in Sound Forge, Sound Recorder or Blaze Media.

If it is not my connections it might be that the Casio simply hasn't got a working 'Line out' (either of them, there's supposedly a 'line out high' and 'line out low' and I've tried both with the same nil result).

So how can I test it?

As I wrote this query it occurred to me that perhaps line out (and the corresponding line in on the computer) are not stereo?

I also gave it a quick try inputting to the microphone in on the computer - I was worried about blowing something up doing that so I didn't do it for long - but I got no apparent response that way, either.

I use Windows and habitually disable or mute unused inputs in the Volume Control, to reduce noise as far as possible.

However, when I do wish to record or to listen, I have to enable them or unmute them in the Volume Control/Properties menu, and I have to set Playback or Recording to see the appropriate controls. Confusingly, the checkbox in Playback means mute, while in Recording it enables recording of this channel.

A number of times, I've spent ages checking connections before realising I'd enabled the Playback of line-in but not the Recording of line-in, for example.

I've not had problems with recording mono sources, though it's rare that I try.

One thing that you could try - sometimes a mono source actually goes through a stereo jack. When you plug the mono plug into this stereo jack it shorts the signal to ground. Try replacing the mono plug with a stereo one. At worst, if it works then you will only receive the signal on one channel.

What is a Casiotone 701?
