Hi guys, I just needed advice on the best program to use to encode lossless music in FLAC and APE formats into MP3's, I've got thousands of these files and and need to save a bit of space, i'm not sure what bitrate would be the best to encode at, I was thinking VBR 192 but i'm open to suggestions, want to retain most of the quality as I do have quite a good setup (HD650 paired with an emu 0404 USB)

Thanks for reading! smile.gif

Hi, use foobar2000 and LAME. Fb2k requires optional APE decoding component.

See Wiki for the details (how to setup fb2k, which LAME version and setting are recommended etc.):

I'd suggest ABXing both LAME 3.98 beta 5 -V 5 (~135 kbit/s) and -V 2 (~192 kbit/s) and answering this question for yourself this way. Your ears aren't ours, hence this was the best possible course of action. You can use foobar's ABX tool in order to test the encodings vs. the sources.

At least both of these settings have proven being quite robust for lots of LAME users. They're the ones most HA members use to get transparent results, as you can see here.

Thanks for the replies, still not sure really
From the results junon linked to it looks like V2 is the way to go to retain most of the quality, I cant trust my ears as what may sound good right now may sound bad later on.

What settings do you guys use when ripping CD's to MP3's?

V2 is a very large gap from V5.. Why do it when there are working settings in between ?
v2 corespond to the old well tested --preset standard and V5 has been in public listening tests @ 128 k . The results of that poll favouring v5 and V2 is because of this popularity - i.e. V2 was good to older members years ago so they still vote for that. New users not aware of --preset standard etc tested newer [more practical] settings and so vote for V5

Today V2 is not the way to go for quality as V1 is better and someone else can get similar high quality using V3 or even V4. What is the point of this new vbr system if the old thinking persists ?

I have used LAME 3.97-release -V0 (vbr-old)

but since I started using Opera 9.50 alpha I moved to LAME 3.98beta -V2 (vbr-new) smile.gif

Edit. BTW, I rip Audio CDs to FLAC images with embedded cuesheets, and then convert to MP3 with foobar2000.
