Full Version: What distortion effect is this?

Hi,

we've discussed the following audio snipped in the AAC forum, but I'm still curious: Why is this effect stronger when using replaygain, i.e. turning volume up digitally?

1. Download the sibelius3_2.m4a from http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....st&p=514971
2. Play it in fb2k and apply track gain at playback. You hear the metallic effect in the beginning.
3. Play it in fb2k, but turn replaygain processing off at playback. Turn up your stereos volume knob very much instead: The effect is way more harmless afair.

Why is this? Does the digital volume increasing need some kind of smoothing here?

You are just experiencing the difference between digital and analog clipping.

It's one of the reasons say the distortion of my guitar sounds differently when I turn the Gain nob on my amp up (or use a tube powered pedal), as opposed to the distortion created by a digital effects box.
