I've played around with sound slimmer (www.soundslimmer.com) and was impressed that it compressed my mp3 files down to 80-85%. (bit identical after extraction on another computer, with af freshly downloaeded sound slimmer))

is there any other utilities like this for mp3 files? I would prefer some kind of open source CLI version

and why might that be?

You don't believe it is possible to strip an mp3 from its huffman lossless compression and them use something stronger to gain a smaller file?

The same way as packjpg does ?
Kinda the same way as mp3 packer does ?
or jpegari ?

or what it is ?

I'm trying it out right now to find out what it is actually doing... could be a repacker, could be a transcoder.

Yeah no, this thing is legit... sorry it sounded sketchy. Check out this thread. AFAICT this is the only utility utilizing this algorithm, so you need it on both ends to compress and decompress. There are no players, winamp plugins etc. even, to my knowledge.

And no, I haven't used any kind of cracks whatsoever. Just downloaded the program and started it after installation.

EDIT: I found what it is: the stupid programmers made a program which starts ONLY when run as administrator. I use my computer as Power User all the time.
