Taken from Nokia home page:

"Memory Effect
The life of a battery may be gradually shortened if it is recharged before it is completely discharged. Memory effect most commonly occurs with Nickel Cadmium batteries, is less of a problem with Nickel Hydride batteries and even less with Lithium Ion batteries."
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Someone found a good way to unload batteries completely (Tested with Nokia 3310):

1) Wait for phone to inform You that battery is low
2) Turn OFF Phone (or phone will turn off automatically)
3) Turn On phone, you will be prompted for PIN
4) Do not enter PIN, leave phone in order to completely unload battery* Phone will be not able to turn on.
5) Start loading battery, but do not turn phone ON before loading completes.

* - if You enter PIN & phone will "boot up", phone can switch off automatically with batteries NOT completely unloaded.

if your phone doesn't use NiCad batteries, and I highly doubt there are any phones left out there that still do, then this advice is meaningless as it only is of any concern with NiCad batteries. NiMH and LiIon's are, for all intents and purposes, immune to this effect and don't have to be cared for in this manner. It doesn't matter at what charge-state you decide to recharge them, it doesn't adversely affect them at all in any meaningful way like it does with NiCads. Thanks though wink.gif

Lithium-Polymer here... biggrin.gif

NiMH behave just like NiCad, except the "memory" can be erased. But it can build up if you keep recharging without letting full discharge first. So at least from time to time you should. My Siemens C35i has a "battery care" option, that basically turns on all lights until the battery dies smile.gif

LiIons are a lot different. Beware not to overcharge these, some tend to caught fire! I think the LiPolymers are less prone to it happy.gif

Not just for Phones & old news.

artemis, that feature is just left over from when the manufacturer was still using NiCads, NiMH's don't have the same memory effect just because the phone company left the battery killer feature in the phone's firmware
