If I add media to Foobar ( keep in note that I haven't installed the Freedb component) does it update / change my tags automatically?

No. Tags are intact unless you (directly or indirectly) ask foobar to change it. Examples of directly: editing the tags through properties/masstager. examples of indirectly changing: play counter, using freedb on the tags

I must've mis-tagged something or clicked something. Can I get a second opinion on this as well? I want to be 100% accurate on this.

How do you think Foobar should do this? No, you have to tag your files manually. Even the freedb component only works when you want it to. The Tagging Component has some little helpers tho, that make tagging much simpler, such as a filename based tagging approach.

kanak is right.

foobar2000 does not change your files when you add them to the library and/or a playlist.

However, it does not prevent other plugins from doing that. For example, there is a component called "New Files Tagger" (foo_cwb_hooks) that can run arbitrary Masstagger scripts to process files as they are added to the library. Avoid such plugins if you do not want your files to be modified.

PS: Your question does not make it clear whether you are asking about a function to automatically fill the tags of your files when you load them, or if you want the exact opposite: to avoid any unwanted modifications to your files.

I want foobar to do nothing to my tags other than read them as is.

Then avoid plugins like play count and freedb etc. Like Frank said, foobar2000 itself doesn't change anything unless you make it to... exercise caution (and common sense) when using components. you should do fine.
Bobanom

I should be alright then? Foobar should not change / edit any tags?
Andreasvb
ReplayGain Scanner writes to tags, or the mp3 data itself. But other than that it should be good.
Bobanom
writes to tags? What do you mean?
Andreasvb
If you scan your files and applying it will write to tag.
Bobanom
Sorry. I don't understand. It will add what?

If you make foobar scan the Replay Gain values of your files, it will write the Replay gain values (track and album gain) as tags in your files.

Sorry. I don't understand. It will add what?

When you run the replay gain scanner (context menu > Replaygain > Scan ...) and press O.K. on the result page, then (and only then) the following tags are written to the scanned file(s):
Track Gain : -5.89 dB
Track Peak : 1.071008

If "scan as album" was selected, these tags are written, too:
Album Gain : -6.61 dB
Album Peak : 1.340530

The values of course depend on the loudness of the individual track. For theory, refer to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replay_Gain

I hope it is more clear now.

So it just makes the sound of the mp3 more balanced or w/e? right? Also it only does it if I choose to do it manually, correct?

I don't know why you keep repeating your question, which has been answered as far back as in the first reply.

Like i said:

IF YOU MAKE IT = YOU "MANUALLY" DO IT.

Bobanom
Wasn't answered in the first reply and I'm very skeptical. Replay gain is different from tagging, am I not correct? smile.gif

Also Foobar has indeed filled in data such as year and genre....
