For lossless compression, should I go for the codec that offers the smallest file?

I see that FLAC is bigger than most of the other formats, WMA, WAVPACK, OPTIMFROG etc...

With lossless, I'm not going to be playing on any portable device (because of it's sheer size, and it's a waste to do so). So I'm going to use it for my home audio system.

Thanks.

No, unless you dont care about 100% CPU-usage during playback and lack of software and hardware support.

The short version is:
From a consumer POV, there are currently just 3 codecs, which are efficient for a user (note: i mean efficiency of entire usage, not just techy stuff). Those are FLAC, Wavpack and ALAC. ALAC is interesting for iPods only. FLAC currently has the best overall software and hardware support. Wavpack has a minor feature and compression advantage, but slightly worse software/hardware support.

Anything else currently is basically just for early adopters and geeks.

What is the FLAC 8 AX2? I don't see the AX2 anywhere.

Edit: How do you setup FLAC for EAC? I always had to do them separately.
