Highlights

New Default User Interface

The new Default User Interface allows complex layout using building blocks that are called UI Elements. The Default User Interface puts a focus on instant usability and easy configuration; it deliberately does not offer total visual customization and reduces the use of title formatting. The Quick Appearance Setup window lets users choose from a set of predefined layouts, color schemes, and playlist configurations. The layout editing mode and scratchboxes allow in-place configuration of the layout with Copy & Paste functionality. The current configuration can be exported as a theme for archiving or transfer to another foobar2000 installation.

The following UI Elements are included by default:
  • Containers: horizontal and vertical Splitter, Tabs, Playlist Tabs, Toolbar Header
  • Media Library Viewers: Album List
  • Playlist Renderers: Playlist View
  • Selection Properties: Album Art Viewer, Selection Properties
  • Utility: Console, Equalizer, Playlist Manager
Containers

Containers provide the ability to structure the main window layout. Splitters arrange two elements horizontally or vertically. Tabs allow switching between multiple elements. The Playlist Tabs element displays a tab for each playlist and hosts a single element which is normally a playlist view. The Toolbar Header element allows to position a toolbar area above or below another element.

IPB Image

Quick Appearance Setup

The Quick Appearance Setup window can be opened from the main menu (View > Layout > Quick Setup) or from the Default User Interface preferences page (Quick Setup button in the Theme Management section).

IPB Image

Spectrum (UI Element)

The Spectrum element displays a spectrogram visualisation. By default it uses global theme colors, but it can also be configured to use custom colors.

IPB Image

Toolbar Header (UI Element)

The Toolbar Header element is a container that hosts a single element and displays a toolbar area with one or more toolbars above or below it.

IPB Image

File Operations (Component)

The File Operations component is used to rename, copy and move files according to specified schemes. Those schemes can be saved as presets and are accessible from the context menu. This component replaces the corresponding features of the deprecated Masstagger component.

IPB Image

Improved File Properties Dialog

The improved Properties Dialog now integrates tagging-features which previously were part of the Masstagger.

For a full overview of what's new, see the release notes page.

Upgrade from previous versions

These upgrade notes extend the general upgrade notes from the FAQ.

You can install foobar2000 0.9.5 on top of an existing foobar2000 0.9.x installation.

Component compatibility

foobar2000 0.9.5 is compatible with most components made for older 0.9.x versions of foobar2000 with the following exceptions:
  • It is not recommended to mix official component DLLs from 0.9.5 with those from earlier versions due to inter-component dependencies in the new version.
  • foo_pqview (Playback Queue Viewer): The new version will not load foo_common as it contains a prototype for global appearance configuration that is unused but could confuse users. Users of foo_pqview should upgrade to a 0.9.5 compatible version.
  • foo_utils (Utilities): The Copy & Paste functions from foo_utils have been integrated into the core. Users of foo_utils should either upgrade to a 0.9.5 compatible version or remove the component if they do not require the component's additional functions.
Updated versions of foo_pqview and foo_utils are available from here.

Configuration, media library, and playlists

The media library and existing playlists are unaffected by upgrading to 0.9.5. The configuration should be unaffected except for Default User Interface settings and certain keyboard shortcuts.

Default User Interface and Title Formatting

The title formatting strings previously located on the Display > Title Formatting can now be found on the Advanced preferences page in the Display / Legacy title formatting settings branch. These strings are no longer used by the new Default User Interface.

Keyboard shortcuts

In order to minimize potential interference with typing in the new Default User Interface, existing single-letter shortcuts without Alt or Control modifier keys are removed on the first run after installing 0.9.5. Manually re-adding these shortcuts, while possible, is not recommended due to the issues stated above.
Synthetic Soul
Requires XP or newer.

Looks like I need to wait until this evening to check on my laptop. smile.gif

Sounds interesting though.

Wow, this is an amazing release

unbelievable

Wow, this is awesome.

As much as I've loved PanelsUI, I'd gladly switch to an interface that focuses on usability and reliability.

This is just what foobar needs. Thanks for listening to your user base for this one. smile.gif

thank you!

Oh my gosh! What a surprise for a big fan of foobar2000! Thank you!

This new standard interface enriched with built-in presets is really a great improvement! Now I get foobar2000 looks pleasant without any effort (I didn't followed any UI improvement since two years and I didn't have the time to understand this whole scripting & components system).

In my opinion this is the most important release since years... maybe the most important one ever.

Congrats, and thank you very much smile.gif

This version is one of those Pringles moments; Once you pop, you can't stop. The usability is great (not that I had any problems with previous versions either) and all the new features in default UI are great.

Thanks Peter

Ha ha ha biggrin.gif I just have a thought "Foobar developer must secretly doing something big for sure. base on the hint here and there." and BOOM this come out.

And it's great wink.gif
Lyx
It didnt made it into the releasenotes, but its worth mentioning, how easy it is now to create autoplaylists via Albumlist.

Sure, it's a very small improvement. But they have a loooooooooong way to go if they wanna match up to panels or columns ui. The new ui looks far from elegant.

This is nice surprise to see a new beta, and wow! what a great beta it is!

I was never a big fan of columns/panels UI, but the disadvantages of those two are gone in 0.9.5. It works all so great together and now it's really easy to set up.

The scratchbox is great, too! I also like the Facets plugin.

Well done!

"They" have no interest in doing that. Maybe you didn't read the UI intro properly smile.gif

0.9.5 with flac 1.2.1 decoding library is now... 79,21% faster!!! While it has no importance on playback it significantly speeds up transcoding (from flac source). [EDIT: only one core is used with both fb2k version]

I also noticed that the number of encoding thread can be set (useful when transcoding from source located on optical media).

Thanks everyone who made this, it's truly brilliant!

Excellent work guys.

I think it's good enough for most users (including myself). I prefer easier to use user interfaces over comples ones, but I think here they actually found a good compromise between usability and the amount features.

The Facets plugin is a good showcase of what's possible now and how a more elegant UI element should be created.

BTW, you can still use the old panels/columns UI interface but I doubt its development will be continued, will it?

An informal post will maybe made soon, which will among other things echo what you wrote above :)

I just tried the new beta, but it crashes when i use columns UI and the fancy new spectrum visual.
Here is the crash info, i hope you guys will find it useful smile.gif

And thanks for your hard work biggrin.gif

I feel like I'm missing something here, because none of the old UI elements are showing up in the "replace element" list for me. I only see the default ones, and Id like to use the browser, bookmarks, lyrics, etc. Also, nothing is showing up in the new albumart panel, and I cant figure out how to get to any kind of settings dialogue for it. I also don't see anything about the "scratchbox " or "facets plugin."

edit: Ok, I found the facets plugin, which is awesome btw. I still really miss the old UI components but I love this new layout system. No chance of backward compatibility?
chaosblade
"Better than sliced bread!". Thanks to the foobar2000 team for the wonderful work so far.

I am sitting right now in an inet-cafe and has downloaded new beta and the brand new facet plugin - i know how i will spend the rest of my day. I expected many new things but not this: it seems to be amazing!

Thanks for your hard work!

One question just: is it a big work for developer of some panels (bookmarks, history, lyricshow, queuemanager...) to transfer their plugins?

Those components you have listed are panels for Columns UI, which is an entirely different user interface.

Panels were never part of the default UI.

From the footnote in the release notes:
QUOTE
UI Elements are conceptually similar to the panels introduced by Columns UI, but are incompatible with them so they were given a new name.

Wow, a new beginning. I'll need some time for that...
BTW, the fb2k default icon has some ugly white pixels at the corner here, wxp, 16 bit colors.

Is there a way to reset the default UI settings only? Would be helpful especially at the beginning...
EDIT: OK I found the quick setup window. Great work.

The layout import/export/cut/copy/scratchbox: Very fine!
alphaex32
Oh ok, I understand. I hope eveyone updates their components to work in the new UI. One more thing I was wondering, how can I create custom button bars? I dont see an option anywhere for it.
~*McoreD*~
Amazing release. Thanks. I am really glad that the default UI will be more attractive to a larger user base.

Sure, it's a very small improvement. But they have a loooooooooong way to go if they wanna match up to panels or columns ui. The new ui looks far from elegant.

0.9.5 does not try to compete with Columns UI or Panels UI as far as total visual customization is concerned. Also, some people consider it elegant when an application blends in with the rest of the crowd; it is largely a matter of taste. wink.gif

Now, a question

Is there a way to lock album art to now playing song only?

It's follow cursor only right now. and i don't see any setting anywhere.

There is no such setting in the beta.

Is Peter still the largest contributer to development (or sole developer) of foobar2000? Or is this release a work of other developers?

Edit: Thanks for the answers Frank Bicking and foosion.

Any plans to include that someday? That would be the last element to let foobar look like a normal windows application, beside of the functionality to have quick access to often used commands (without going to main or context menu and without remebering hundreds of shortcuts)

Peter is still responsible for almost everything in the installer and for everything on the optional components page. As far as actual code goes, my contribution is limited to foo_freedb2 and some pieces of code used in foobar2000 itself (edit: all of those predate 0.9.5 by the way). The components on other pages (Frank's and mine, for example) are the work of their respective author. picmixer has made the new icons (the foobar2000 and file type icons). Then there is a bunch of people who did testing and helped with the release preparations.

I just tried the new beta, but it crashes when i use columns UI and the fancy new spectrum visual.
Here is the crash info, i hope you guys will find it useful smile.gif

Try no tusing Columns UI, and instead try the new default UI... this is where it's at wink.gif

Joy to the world

This release look FANTASTIC. can't wait to check it out. Big thanks to the foobar2000 developers.

As a general observation: people in this thread are too focussed on configuration rather than usage and doing stuff with foobar. A significant amount of minor features... and possibilities to combine new features - havent been discovered yet, because people are more concerned with configuration rather than usage.
bubbleguuum
Thnaks to the dev team for this great and unexpected version!! Lots of new features, it must have been a lot of work.

The new easily configurable UI is great and should attract new users. I was able to almost replicate my playlist tree config in a few clicks! Except for some custom queries so I hope it'll be possible to create custom "views" in the tree intead if the default one listed in the "view" combo
Slotos
This is just awesome. And I eagerly wait for Navigator for the new Defaul UI =)

Thanks for reporting. I'll fix that when I get the time to the next few days. I have to admit that I didn't really check the 16 bit version on different backgrounds.

Well, all else I have left to say to everyone is, enjoy the beta. We are all very glad to see how well received it is by the users and hope you enjoy it as much as we have during the lengthy period of alpha testing. biggrin.gif

Whoa...entirely new foobar2000 interface it will make it easier for me to recommend it to the slightly experienced to no experienced user now. Plus it looks and functions great, granted there will be bugs and kinks to workout but the new approach is awesome.

Nice job, foobar200 team.

The WYSIWIG edition of the layout + scrachbox is just brilliant!

I suppose the next version of the SDK will allow wrinting of UI Elements and to port existing ui panels ?
Canar
Highlights of the new release for me:
  • Improved drag and drop support.
  • Improved clipboard support.
  • Properties dialog is even better (I rarely use Masstagger now).
  • The File Operations context menu options rock my world.

The user interface has really been completely overhauled and is so much more pleasant to work with. Excellent job!

When you say blend in I assume you mean that it looks like any other app for XP/Vista. The thing is that it barely does. Foobar truly has potential to be a great player with a simple yet appealing UI. I realize this is beta but here are some things that are bothering me. It's all about the details.

1. The progressbar and volume control are both oversized, as well as the splitters.
2. It would look a lot better if all elements had border style options (including splitters). The default borders look terrible.
3. Formating for album art? Like... albumart\[%album%].jpg. Would be nice with album art in the playlist as well, like in iTunes.
4. Autosizing of columns in playlist view / playlist manager / playlist search.
5. Would be nice if toolbar panels were separate from the toolbar container.

Keep up the good work.
MachineHead
Highlights of the new release for me:
  • Still unobtrusively goes to system tray and plays whatever I throw at it.

Yay for mundane.

Wow... new version!! And the new default interface gives Columns UI and Panels UI a run for their money by far! The new interface is an unexpected, wonderful treat for all foobar2000 users, especially for new to novice users who want to experiment with the interface w/o dealing with too much code. I would assume that more experienced users are having a blast with all of the tinkering. It's shocking that this is a beta, since it runs quite smoothly, no hitches. Probably a personal preference, but I wish that a lyrics panel will be added... or maybe it's there, but can't find it. Anyways, an amazing job by the people who make foobar!!!
foosion
I've split some posts about - I guess - different people's approach to using foobar2000. Please stay on topic and avoid being hostile to users who do not share your opinion.

Additional reminder: please post bug reports in separate threads.
Frank Bicking
While all feedback is appreciated, we would like to avoid the typical "beta thread syndrome" in the long run.

Threads with many pages can make it quite difficult to keep track of the numerous proposals and error reports. This would most likely cause concerns to be repeated, and might in the worst case even result in bugs remaining unfixed. That said, please try to stick to one topic when posting, instead of covering a broad range of completely different aspects. This will make it much easier to properly split posts into comprehensible separate threads, which we will continue to do if necessary.

Please do also consider to start a new topic, especially for bug reports, as mentioned by foosion.

Just include "0.9.5" somewhere in its title to catch our attention.
Nitrius

stable so far, if you removed all the unneeded components (uie_albumart etc...)

Wow. This is a masterful upgrade.

In a couple of minutes I had a display that looks just as good as my old ColumnsUI layout.

And I notice that real Random Play is back!

You guys rock.
