Having just installed the newest beta I have been trying to add a custom grouping scheme that will sort by artist and then album. I searched the forum but couldn't find anything that would explain this to me. What is the syntax for entering the column names (album, artist etc) into the new custom scheme dialogue?

The syntax is the regular title formatting syntax. In your case, you could use %album artist% - %album%.
