Full Version: Problems with .m4a files in Vista

Hey, I'm running foobar on Vista Basic and can't play .m4a files. I have downloaded the ALAC codec, but I can't even get the .m4a files in my music to show up to convert, let alone play them. When I do select one individually I get this message:

Unable to open item for playback (Data truncated):

The files are downloaded via torrents, so I can't attest to whether they were ripped directly from cd etc. They do work on my friend's computer which has iTunes, but I'd rather not download that for reasons which people on this forum should all be aware of.

Converting from one lossy format to another (i.e. mp3) results in poor quality according to research I've done, but it seems like foobar should be able to handle these files being it's so extensible.

Any tips or ideas to get the .m4a files to play?

Thanks for the help,
Chris

Did you download the actual foobar2000 ALAC decoding support component from the additional components page?

Yeah, I did, and it apparently had no effect. Any other ideas?

Well, like I said the extension is m4a, though I'm not sure if that doesn't mean it can't have mp4 as a container. Even still, foobar should be able to play mp4s. I understand what you're saying about the containers here, but what does that mean as far as going to play the files goes? The only extension that seemed relevant was the ALAC decoder, which as I said didn't work.

As a side note, some of the files bring a "sharing violation" error message instead of the "data truncated" one. That might shed some light on the issue. I've heard Apple encoded files have trouble with foobar, but as of yet haven't seen a way to get around it.

Thanks again for the help.
