Full Version: MPC enc - adjust for clipping

Hello..

It's been a VERY productive day with MPC operations (just got into it today). Luckily there is a LARGE IDE drive here with lots of WAV files to work on. When mppenc.exe runs, it reports that several tracks have `clipped' and they require scaling. Have read the thread on ReplayGain in this forum, but this is a slightly different question.

What is the BEST way to handle or adjust files that have clipped?? There would be a `purest' way such as re-encode with the specified scale-factor.. and there might also be a `quick' way such run a BAT file or ReplayGain. From a brief overview of the docs.. it seems a scaling factor is written in the preamble somewhere.

Please expand on this.. would not mind re-encoding (at least in the early going) with a scale factor. Also.. is there a LOG file that contains all of this info??

Cheers..!!

Some useful switches:
--xlevel should handle clippings in most of the cases, if it 'fails' due to 'poor' cd mastering, no luck then
--stderr <filename> writes log.
More info in MPC forum stickies. B)

yes, use the xlevel switch. that can help. if you are still getting clipping errors in the encoder output, its likely they are clipping on the .wav as well.

to eliminate any post-encode clipping (and loud tracks usually clip), however, use replaygain (see sticky) on the mpc's.

I'd like to stress however that it will only fully eliminate clipping when "clip protect" is selected during playback (or --prev with mppdec).
I've seen cases where replaygain even introduced clipping by giving +gain to certain tracks. Now that was with the headroom slider (Winamp plugin) at K-14 , if you'll go to K-16 or more clipping will be less likely.

Use "replaygain --listallreport *.mpc" in the same directory as your MPC files. It will give you a suggested K setting. I ran it on a directory of mine that has 3600+ MPC files and it suggested K-17.

add .\ as the target. If the target ends on \ it will do subdirs.

BTW. the MPCbatch frontend has a check box for this.
