I'm a long-time EAC user and for some years now I've been experiencing this issue with EAC. This may be old-hat to some (or all) of you here, but I've searched the forums and can't quite find a post addressing this exact issue.
When converting multiple files from WAV to MP3, I will often (I'd say 75-80% of the time, in fact) get this error:
Unhandled exception at Compression.1972 -> ASSIGN-RANGE
EAC itself will freeze up, though will almost always go ahead and convert at least the first of the files. And if I re-open EAC, it will often continue and convert a second file, indicating that another file was held in its queue (though I don't believe I've ever seen it convert more than one additional file after re-opening).
This problem never occurs when converting a single file. And though I don't think that the problem seems to be caused by a particular number of files, I would say that the more files I'm trying to convert, the more likely the error to occur.
I'm not talking about hundreds or even tens of files at a time, here. I probably never convert more files at a time than would fit on a CD.
After experiencing this error with a given group of files (say, 12 files), with EAC converting the first file and then (after restarting the program) converting the second file, I can usually (but not always) convert the remaining 10 files without a problem. Though I might sometimes get the error again.
On a related note, EAC also has a problem with multiple files when using its ID3 tagging feature. I will not get an error message; the program just freezes and has to be shut down and restarted. Again, this never happens with a single file, only multiple files.
I'm in the process of converting complete (and I mean *complete*) sets of Beethoven and Mozart to MP3. We're talking about 250 or so CDs, and if I have to convert/tag 1 file at a time and/or deal with these errors, it's going to take me about a year or so to finish this process. Despite the simplicity of EAC's ID3 tagging, I really like it because it's the only program I've used that "cascades" (for lack of a better term) the tags. In other words, if you select 12 files and then enter title, artist, album, and track # info for the first file, the artist, album, and consecutive track #, etc. will already be filled in for the rest of the files as you go and you'll only have to fill in the title, which is very useful. And yes, I know there are all kinds of features and programs out there that will create tags from the track title, etc., but with classical music you often have HUGELY long and descriptive names as well as multiple "movements" per title, so in order to keep things organized on my Sansa player I have to come up with a unique naming/tagging scheme. I'm currently using Name It Your Own Way (NIYoW) for file renaming and Tag & Rename for ID3 tagging, which are pretty darn good, but I still wish I could use EAC for tagging.
So I guess what I'm looking for here is any suggestion on how to avoid or fix this EAC error. That, or if anyone knows of another program that can handle multiple WAV->MP3 file conversion with LAME as well as a similar style of ID3 tagging, well ... I'm all ears!
Thanks,
