Full Version: NULL SAMPLES in middle of songs, EAC+ALAC problem
Hydrogenaudio Forums > CD-R and Audio Hardware > CD Hardware/Software

Hi. After months of preparation (I had an Apple PPC so couldn't use EAC until now) I started to rip my few hundred of CDs, after weeks of work I finally finished. And here's the problem. Listening to some music, I discovered a song with a problem.

In the middle the song stops hardly, with a little pop, and goes silent for some 4 or 5 seconds.
I thought was something wrong with the drive of my business notebook, a Philips on Acer TM, as that CD was ripped with EAC_Pack on such notebook. But I was wrong.
After few days I found another song that has an hole of some second, and was ripped with a Yamaha desktop burner. So it seems that this problem is not hardware-related.

Opening tracks with an editor audio I can see that is really silence and samples are simply missed, pratically an hole in the track. EAC log declared that everything was ok. I don't know what accurate rip detected, but for EAC track was perfect. Original CDs were no-stratched for sure.

What was? Some faulty setting in EAC or a problem with iTunes encoder?
If some ever had this problem, please let me know.

Beyond causes, it could be a really help if there's a software that could check my .mp3s or my .m4a (I convert all tracks for my ipod, so it's the same) looking for silence.
I really need to know wich tracks are wrong.

Thank you very much.

If you have the EAC logs of some of the CDs that are giving you problems, please post them here in CODEBOXs. This will save us asking many questions and you having to answer them. AccurateRip writes its confidence report in the EAC log.

If you do not have the logs:
  1. What model drive do you have?
  2. What were the encoders' versions?
  3. What extraction method did you use?
  4. What error recovery did you use?
  5. Are you sure you have AccurateRip properly installed and configured?

3) Secure, as you can see in the log
4) ? not sure
5) Yes, but I had not internet connection when I ripped, so don't know if was ok.

If you have no AccurateRip due to having no internet you should at least have used "Test & Copy", to see if you twice get the same CRC if ripping twice.

With 100% track quality for every track and no use of C2 pointers, I seriously doubt that T&C is going to reveal any problems.

is there a way to submit my EAC.log files to accuraterip database?

Install the latest version of EAC from the official website, which is 0.99 pb3. It comes with AccurateRip.dll pre-installed. Once it's configured correctly you'll get AR results in your log, too.

I do not use C2 pointers and once or twice had different CRCs for Test and Copy even with 100%, IIRC.

Sorry, deleted that Rip, so no log left... was before my HA time smile.gif
SamHain86
Does the 0.99pb3 have the new AccurateRip DLL?
spoon
It has the old dll.
Fandango
AFAIK, the old one should still work fine here.
greynol
All three versions of AR seem to work just fine for me.

@Engywuck, I believe you but I don't think it happens very often. The drive being used could have some influence. It's unfortunate that you don't have any logs to show and have left us to trust your recollection. I still have my reservations that T&C is going to reveal anything useful, but I don't want to discourage the OP from doing additional testing.

thank you. and is there a way to scan my .mp3 looking for silence or some way to reveal discontinued music in a file?

There are one or two things I can think of: one is that you use a graphical sound editor and look at the waveform of each MP3 file to see if there are gaps.

Another way is to check the MP3s for 32bit frames, but that only works for MP3s encoded in VBR mode. Silence will be encoded using the smallest possible MPEG frame which happens to be 32bit. A tool for showing you the distribution of frame sizes is EncSpot Pro. Search the forum it was shareware, but the author released a key file here.

There might be some WAV tools around that can detect the amount of silence in a file, you'd have to decode to WAV in case they don't support MP3 as input files.

Anyway, you should think about it if it's really worth it to check all your MP3s or whether it's more convenient to just replace them on demand when you discover the silent gaps during listening. Depends on how many MP3s might be affected, I guess.

PS: for obvious reasons you cannot make an AccurateRip check on lossy audio files and expect positive results... wink.gif

thank you but, wait.
i wrote .mp3 as I convert original files for my iPod and I thought there was most tools for such type.
but my originals are Apple Lossless

I now have a log!

But how do I add a file here? Ah well, then just the important sections:

OK, not 100% Track quality, but even Tracks with duplicate CRC have 100% on this CD and what's 0.1%? ;-)

@mods. if you want to split this thread: I have no objections ;-)
greynol
100% track quality was the key part to that statement I made earlier. If there are re-reads and/or problems with the test pass but the copy pass was clean, do they still show up in the log? I don't remember.

A single set of rereads at the very end of a track are normal (annoying, but normal). Depending on the length of the track this situation may give a lower quality, like 99.7%.
