Full Version: iTunes CD Burn clicks between songs

Hi

Apologies if this isn't the correct forum, I also did a search but couldn't find the answer.

I have some Wav files which play perfectly in iTunes as a playlist, no clicks or gaps, tracks flow into each other.
But when I burn as a CD, iTunes adds small clicks between the tracks. Is this because iTunes burns in Track-at-once rather than Disc-at-once?

I have set 'Gap' to 'None', and no cd-text. Are there any other settings I have missed, is this possible in iTunes?

Or can you recommend a good audio CD burner for Windows and Mac?

Many thanks

I've once had these clicks as well with an audio CD burned by Nero in TAO mode. AFAIK, one should always burn audio CDs in Disc-at-once mode.
Burrrn (www.burrrn.net) is a free and good audio CD burner for Windows.

Hi sTisTi

Thanks, just downloading...
I have a feeling this won't work either as I tried disc-at-once in Nero but still had the clicks.
So my theory is that it's either the audio is being quantised to CD frames and so leaving slight gaps or overlaps, or they leave a few frames gaps between tracks even if you set pause to zero (for compatibility with cheap CD players), so maybe Burrrn will work...?

Just off to test burn...

Many thanks

If you set the gaps to zero, there should not be any gap-frames left. Having CDs without gaps is perfectly within the audio CD standard, so no need to add any for compatibility reasons.
Another question: Does this only happen with those specific wav files or with ANY audio file you burn as audio CD?

Hi sTisTi

I've solved the problem.
It's the difference between CD frames (75 per second) and audio sample frames (44100 per second)
If you have created the audio yourself you will virtually never cut it on a CD frames boundary, so the CD burner software cuts it to boundaries to keep to the standard. You don't notice 5 or 10 ms chopped off if the track fades out, but if it's a smooth crossfade it results in a click. Obviously this doesn't happen if you rip the audio from a CD, which is already quantised to CD frames, only if you create or edit the audio yourself.

So I chopped a bit off one track and added it to the next to make everything CD frame length multiples, and now it works perfectly.

Cheers

Jeff

Actually it probably doesn't chop off any samples, but pads them out with silence. At least this is the way I've always seen it done.

Hi Greynol

Maybe, but I would presume it wouldn't click then, just be a slight dip in volume. (All the audio was edited so that the last sample didn't click if played on its own)

Happy Christmas

Jeff
