I am sure people have asked this, and I have searched but can't find a good answer.

Hypothetical.

I have 5 mp3 files named UNKNOWN in an UNKNOWN named folder (no INFO!). Is there a program out there that will search an online database and somehow come up with ID3 tags (and fill them in)?

Now let's pretend I have five... thousand. Is there some solution for that too?

I know there probably isn't... but anything to make the TAGGING (don't care about FILE name, just the ID tags) at least a bit easier?

Give several solutions, from best to okay, if possible.

Also, some do have SOME tags, partials. I want this ID tagger to leave that data alone, if possible. Or I want a multiple choice option. Ideally. If not, okay, but that would be nice.

I am... tired... of editing... ID... tags... blargggggg.

So, what you have is a load of files with no tags or "unknown" tags, and you want them magically tagged?

If they are ordered in folders per album, you could try using the freedb tagger for foobar2000.

Yes. Magic would be nice. smile.gif

Another ideal would be a multi-database tagger. Do they exist? Then I can pick the info that is best. Also if it had a way to preview the music while doing it... mmmmmm... magic.

If not, what databases do people recommend as the best overall?

OH! And I am willing to pay to have a program or suite of programs that can help with this. Free would be nicer..... yay.

I don't think there is a magical way to fill the tags with proper names and stuff, since those files aren't like "watermarked". The only solution I see is to -masstag- it. Even that is a pain, but a small pain. You could use foobar to masstag.

Have you looked at Musicbrainz?

Try either the Classic Tagger or Picard.

MusicBrainz tagger will do this.

I don't know how exactly how reliable it is (I don't use it), but I'm certain it isn't perfect.

To clarify, the foobar2000 freedb tagger submits the files as if they were a CD and tags them according to freedb information. I haven't tried this on a large scale, but I've found it works quite well.

Some friends of mine have horrible tags in their collection, due to incompetence, and when I show them this, they react as if it was in fact magic.

Caveat: Only works on complete albums.
