Full Version: Windows Explorer's poor link with Foobar

For four years I used Windows Explorer--XP Home-- as my music library, and I was able to right click on a folder with a number of Monkeys Audio-compressed music files and I was given the choice to play them in Foobar, which I could also do with individual music files. When I changed my computer to Vista using the same hard drive for my music collection, I was no longer given a choice to play on Foobar or even WMP.

This was true even when I tried with another computer running XP Home. Moreover, when I would go to Edit, Select All and select all of the music files in a folder, and then try to play them, in some folders the choice to play all files in Foobar would show up, but in others, transferred to the hard drive at the very same time as the aforementioned, no choice to play the all-selected files was given.

However, if I right-click just one of those files, I was given a choice to play in Foobar. This is extremely frustrating, for I now have to go thru a rigamarole just to play a CD on my HD.

The only variable I can think of in all of this is the fact that I downloaded the latest iteration of Foobar. Is it possible that that is the problem?

Yes, I had done that when setting up Foobar again this time.

I had checked all of the file names associated with Monkeys Audio.

Maybe this helps: Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I have this problem too. It seems to be related to the number of files you select, I'd say it's something to do with the maximum length of a command-line. If you look at the string it uses to execute windows media player with multiple files:
CODE
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /prefetch:6 /SHELLHLP_V9 Play /DataObject& #58;NEFEPEHFBAAAAAAAOABAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMAAAAAAAAAAAAGEAAAAAAAAFAAAAAAAJCMEIOBMMOLFLDMNOJNDMOMLMPJBMDPP
OAIKAAAAENPAANPAGJCLJIAKKGANLOKKAAAAAAAA

Explorer's obviously doing something special here, perhaps foobar2000 doesn't support this method of passing filenames? I'm assuming the 'DataObject' refers to an OLE DropObject or whatever it's called.

This is a different problem. Vista introduced a limitation to 15 files (not 100% sure about the number) per standard context-menu item. If you want to open more files via context menu, the application must provide a full-fledged shell extension.

Please let me know if someone knows where this new behavior is documented.

My problem surfaced when I switched computers that I used with the music HD, and it happened both with a Vista OS and XP Home, where before it had been functioning perfectly with XP.

Where can I find a tutorial or instructions for using Foobar? In setting up a Playlist I found that a number of files I had selected (but not the folders themselves) were not included in the Playlist. How do I add those files to the Playlist, and why would such a thing happen?

I've never had any problems with older iterations of Foobar.

You can always use the File->Add Folder command from within foobar2000, or drag and drop into a playlist from explorer.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Go to Preferences > File Types, everything you're looking for is there

Just check "Folder Context Menus" and then "Play in foobar2000" will appear in context menu.
