Full Version: How to close the Now Playing balloon tooltip automatically on WinXP?

I just switched from Winamp to foobar2000 and I'm really digging it. The one thing I miss is the mini view of the player, but I've been using the balloon tooltips and global hotkeys instead and it's working fine.

The thing that's troubling me is that on my machine at home, with Windows XP SP2, I need to manually close the tooltips every time the song changes. On my Vista machine at work, they will automatically fade out after a few seconds, which is nice. Is there any way to get this behavior on my Windows XP machine? Or are there any other ways of showing a minimal status box that tells you when the track changes, or when you use the "show song info" hotkey?

I searched through the forums but most of what I found was relating to older versions and Win2k vs XP issues. I'm not sure if this specific issue has been addressed. Maybe everybody likes the default behavior of the balloon tooltip where you need to manually close it each time?

Thanks!

As I remember, if you are using the computer the balloon will close after the time-out specified by foobar2000.

If you are not using the computer it will not close automatically (until you start using it again). "Using the computer" is not precisely defined, but I would imagine it is similar to any task that prevents the screensaver from popping up.

The exact text by Microsoft is below.
QUOTE
No more than one balloon ToolTip at at time is displayed for the taskbar. If an application attempts to display a ToolTip when one is already being displayed, the ToolTip will not appear until the existing balloon ToolTip has been visible for at least the system minimum timeout value. For example, a balloon ToolTip with uTimeout set to 30 seconds has been visible for seven seconds when another application attempts to display a balloon ToolTip. If the system minimum timeout is ten seconds, the first ToolTip displays for an additional three seconds before being replaced by the second ToolTip. If the user does not appear to be using the computer, the system does not count this time towards the timeout.

Also relevant regarding the timeout specified by foobar2000:
QUOTE
The system enforces minimum and maximum timeout values. uTimeout values that are too large are set to the maximum value and values that are too small default to the minimum value. The system minimum and maximum timeout values are currently set at 10 seconds and 30 seconds, respectively.

That sounds great -- but I don't see anywhere to set that timeout. I certainly have been using the computer while testing this. I'll check again tonight (I'm at work on Win Vista now) but I don't see anywhere in foobar2000 to set a timeout for the balloon tooltips.

foobar2000 sets this timeout internally. It is not available as an option to the user.

Hi, I have read the post and I have a similar question. I was using foobar in XP and I usually use foobar minimized in the notification area in order to avoid fulling the task bar and I use it completely with shortcuts.

However, some time ago, I have bought a new laptop with Vista and balloon tooltip does not appear when song changes. After seeing the preferences I noted I do have sticked the option "Show balloon tooltip on song change" but it does not work. Is it a bug? Is it produced by Vista? Do you know how can I solve it??

it's not a direct solution, but maybe it can help:

I actually had the same problem as you on my laptop. Although it describes a different problem, following the instructions here seems to have fixed it for me:

I haven't restarted my computer yet so let's hope it holds up after that..
