Been looking around HA for info but haven't really found any answer to my question, tried to PM Gambit but that didn't work so it's time for a little post............

Can anyone tell me if the development of Burrrn have been put on a halt or what?

Accepting the possibility that it's author could emerge from hiding with a brand new version, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Besides, is there anything that Burrrn does that the new ImgBurn can't do?

Burrrn is the only application I am aware of that was designed with the sole purpose of audio cd creation. As such it is at once a very simple, yet powerful, application. Perhaps it is possible to use: replaygain (album or track), cd text, bin and cue sheets, m3u and other playlists, as well as the multitude of input formats (mp3, aac, ogg vorbis, flac, wavpack, etc, etc) that burrrn supports; with the likes of k3b or imgburn but certainly not out-of-the-box and not with such a simple layout.

Believe it or not burrrn is one of the few applications I run through wine on linux simply because it is an application designed to do exactly what I want to do. If gambit has completely given up his audio projects, it would make me more then a little sad.

Unless I am missing something, ImgBurn cannot burn Audio CDs without first creating a cue sheet.
I use ImgBurn for vids, but can't imagine why I would use it to replace Burrrn.

On 10th February 2008 version 2.4.0.0 has been released and includes the following:
QUOTE
- Added: Support for multi-session/track CD reading/burning (*using a CUE file - this includes Audio CD's from anything DirectShow/ACM can handle - AAC/APE/FLAC/MP3/MPC/OGG/PCM/WAV/WMA etc).
- Added: New 'Create CD CUE File...' option to the Tools menu (and a button to the Write mode and Write Queue windows for easy access). Here you can build your own custom layout CUE file (for burning in Write mode). ID3/APE/OGG tags within Audio files can be used as a basis for CD-TEXT.

Course donated again and you all should buddies.

EDIT: Donation part.

From the version number I'm guessing this is imgburn?

I didn't realize that so much functionality had been added in the most recent version . . . . I'm going to see how well it runs through wine.

I see that the Burrrn site hasn't been updated in ages and the last version of the program is a beta; is the project dead?

So are there any reasons to change from Burrrn to ImgBurn? I just started using Burrrn recently and by reading this thread, I have found another CD burning software!

Sorry to post in this old topic, but I was wondering if we maybe could convince the author of Burrrn to release it as open source? Then we can improve the program ourselfs. Does someone the attitude of the author towards open source?

Improve it? You can always update the backend programs yourself like lame.exe, flac.exe, etc., although I personally leave the included cdrdao.exe as is. I've been updating the backends myself for years now.

Thanks for posting that - it made me look into it again. I was under the impression the lame.exe binary (version 3.96.1) bundled with Burrrn was a custom build. Now I see it is the cdrdao.exe binary (version 1.1.7) which has "burnatonce extensions version 0.4", so probably shouldn't be swapped out for the current version (1.2.2).

Which means I can replace the bundled lame.exe binary with the latest (version 3.98.2), but would it make a difference? I thought such a change would only affect encoding, & Burrrn is just using it for decoding.
Andavari
Probably doesn't make a huge difference replacing the backends, I've just always did it with zero issues. However like you've stated the cdrdao.exe is a special build for it, hence I will never mess with it.
