I apologise if I posted this in the wrong forum or even the wrong board altogether but I'm desperate to make this work. I bought a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound card today because my Asus P5B onboard SoundMAX sound card is terrible - there's a constant background static noise/beeping thing which you can even record using normal software when you turn up the Wave output volume. Its "Stereo Mix" input doesn't work at all for me, it was just a constant stream of low volume static which sounded similar to the other static, definitely unrelated to line-in/microphone input I had plugged in at that time. I used to have a SoundBlaster Live! whose "What you hear" input worked just fine on Windows XP. I'm using Windows Vista 64-bit now though (urgh) and I didn't manage to make the old drivers of this product (which is no longer supported by Creative) work with Vista. The X-Fi Vista drivers give you four recording devices:

Microphone
Line-In
Auxiliary
S-PDIF/In

None of which appear to allow you to record "What you hear". I read that Vista drivers tend not to permit you to record this on purpose or something because of protected content/streaming issues?!

Would you please help me out? Is there a simple way for me to record "What you hear" by using special software? I am going to buy splitters on Monday otherwise so I can simply plug in the output back into the line-in socket or something. But that's inferior of course, there's a considerable loss of quality I suppose.

I just talked to somebody who has an X-Fi Xtreme Music and he actually does have that What U Hear device...

This is a known problem with Vista... But, I don't have Vista and I don't know there is a "real solution". You may be able to use a cable looped-back from line-out-to line-in, or a program like Total Recorder can probably do it. (Although, Total Recorder is not yet fully Vista-compatible.)

I had the same problem as you and think this will solve the problem.
Vista disables some of your audio devices by default, you can activate them in the control panel.
This is how you do it [control panel in classic mode]
control panel -> audio -> recording -> context menu -> show inactivated devices -> right click on "what you hear" and select activate.
Hope this was what you were looking for.

I think you mean Sound -> Recording -> Show Disabled Devices/Show Disconnected Devices.
I have those already activated and it still doesn't show up.

I have a Creative Audigy 2 ZS on my PC use the "What You Hear" setting on the Recording Devices setting within Vista and it works fine as i can use any audio/screen recording software.

I record Webcasts or Webinar sessions a product like HyperCam2 (with the audio coming from Skype - audio from a conference call).

The question is: How can I get the same ability on a Notebook? Do i need to get a Creative card for the notebook like the Sound Blaster X-fi for notebook xpress card? OR some other product? Would it have the 'What you hear' feature? It doesn't explicitly say that on site.

I've being looking for a similar record 'What You Hear' solution at the recording option level so i can use HyperCam (or any screen recording software) along with Skype to record those webcasts,

i have a question i want to play music in paltalk like i did in xp but now i got vista home-- and for the life of me i can not fique how to do it-- i have been reading how to on web but it not helping-- for one - i do not have Stereo Mix look for Wave or Wave out or What you Hear for Creative cards. - as i got a creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound card


some of what i have see state vista hide some setting-- i found how to show show disabled devices in speaker icon / Record controls,, but i still do not find any Stereo Mix look for Wave or Wave out or What you Hear for Creative cards

in my sound/recording all i have is --- Microphone & Line- in ---& Auxiliary--& S/ppif-in and in sound playback speaker== & digital audio interface-- and that with disconnected devices and disabled devices click and enable
