Ive got a few thousand CD's ripped to FLAC in individual folders in the format of "Album Artist - Album"

Each folder has cover art saved as folder.jpg

The process for ripping has moved from EAC to Plextools to dbpoweramp over a 4 year period. Everything has recently been reflaced to 1.2.1 however due to the various ripping software/teachniques a lot of tag data is missing or incorrect.

Every song has at least the following tag data: Album Artist, Artist, Album, Track#, Track

A lot of stuff however is missing... such as genre, band, release year and other tag info.

There are two things I'd like to do:

1. Id like to run a batch automated re-tag to look up the albums using the embedded album artist - album tag or using the directory structure. Id like it to only update the missing tag info preferably but will deal with it if thats not possible.

Leaving my post at this point right here, what are my options? Id like no user interaction once the job begins and possibly just a report of any titles that werent found during the process so that I can manually update those.


2. Now to make this a little trickier... assuming there is something that can do what I requested in number 1, is there anything that can do it and also support AMG lookups? I believe Tag Clinic might fit the bill for number 1 (I plan to try this out tonight, but if you have any insight let me know), however it only supports MusicBrainz. I paid for an AMG subscription so I'd like to use it and using freeDB would be nice as a last resort if AMG or MB fail to find anything. The software doesn't have to be free however Id like to keep the price under $100 if possible.

A quick reply to myself in case anyone else needs this information.

In regards to 1; automated batch tagging/re-tagging Ive found 2 programs that somewhat do the job.

MusicBrainz Picard - Free. Picard essentially checks for a PUID and then checks the MusicBrainz database for a match. You tell it to go and walk away. Its somewhat accurate but there is a lot of room for improvement.

The interface is a bit clunky and there is not a lot of customization. Other than the standard fields you cant choose what fields should be updated and which should not.


Jaikoz - $30. Jaikoz is Picard on steroids. It works the same way as Picard only it allows custom tag options and the ability to set up what fields are most important in terms of finding a correct match and setting a threshold requirement for an album to really be considered a match.


As for my 2nd request... Ive not found anything yet that works with AMG. There is a software called TagRunner that seems like its the perfect solution but it does not support FLAC.

I purchased a license for Jaikoz this morning and plan to test it out extensively this week.

I also purchased a license for Jaikoz and haven't received jack yet. It seems the site is down. Like you, I'd like "professional" tagging software but it seems all we have are these fly-by-night operations that take your money and don't give you a license or even access to the software or web site.

TagRunner looked good to me at first but then I discovered it had no flac support. Personally, I wouldn't even release tagging software with no flac support. That's just nuts. In fact, I wouldn't care if all it supported was flac, but not supporting flac is like opening a burger joint that only serves chicken, turkey and tofu burgers.

I've been looking for a comprehensive tagging solution for weeks now and I've seen everything out there and honestly I'm not satisfied with any of them, even the commercial ones.

You'd think some company would have released the quintessential audio tagging software by now. I wouldn't even mind to pay for database access just so long as it was exhaustive and comprehensive. I have some classical music and I've found the amount of data associated with it can be extensive. It would be nice to have all of that information saved to the track automatically.

I am looking for a mostly hands-free rip/tag/store solution. Ripping and music library are OK (EAC and foobar) but there is a big hole in the middle for tagging!

I've tried Picard and MusicBrainz on some classical discs with poor results; I certainly wouldn't let it run unattended! I've tried it a couple of times and find its clunky interface almost impossible to work with.

One thing to keep in mind when tagging unattended is that for some cd's freedb returns more than one result, and not always the correct cd.
How to handle such an situation??

I used to use foobar 8.3. entering all cd's to be tagged, and then start tagging as multiple albums and for every cd select the correct entry.
Not unattended, but quite fast
