Full Version: Does ReplayGain reduce the dynamic range of tracks?

I'm about to ReplayGain all my albums by 'Scan Selection As Albums (by tags)'. My question is will RG affect the volume of moments in individual songs? Example, a classical music piece where it starts quiet and it will build into a loud crescendo. My fear is the whole song will sound flat as there is no quietness/loudness difference in a track.

Oh yay it just deleted tags on my 30gb of mp3s.

You seem to confuse Replaygain with some kind of dynamic compression, which does what you said (monitoring volume all the time and constantly change volume to make the whole track sound consistent or "flat")

Think of replaygain as an volume knob, Track gain mode is like you change volume knob for every track before it's play to make every track have same loudness. Album gain is like you change volume knob once per album. You're not going to change volume for the whole track.

What did you tell it to do that you lost your tags? can you grab info from freedb or discogs?
shazzam
I just let it do its thing. Came back and 'Album Title' and all long filenames were shortened and 'Genre' was changed from whatever the genre originally was to 'Other'. Maybe Squeller knows what I did wrong.

I know.
You should wait for an answer if you put a question.

You retagged them with freedb and all the genre tags shows "other"?
Thats odd.
Never had that problem.
Maybe you can retry it with one album at a time.

My original question had nothing to do with RG retagging. Just an unexpected twist.
I retagged them manually without freedb. It doesn't matter anyway, I'm nearly done retagging.

Which tag type did you use when you have lost tags?
