Full Version: A tagging question.

After ripping, I tend to remove tags from MP3 files and tag them again with only the basic info - title, artist, album, year and track number.

I tried a few tagging programs and in my experience MP3 Tag Tools seems to be the fastest and easiest to use. There is however one thing that I cannot seem to get rid of - and that is the Genre field. I make sure I don't tick that field's square, as well as Comment field's (which doesn't show up later), but whenever I point at a file dBpowerAMP is showing "Genre: Other".

I noticed that when tagging with Mp3tag this doesn't happen but I find using that program to be sort of time consuming.

What to do?

As far as I know:
  1. when encoding an MP3 with LAME you have to have a proper genre tag or else it will not tag
  2. Usually programs will say "other" when no genre tag is present
So they might not have genres, just dBpa tells you they are "other."

Try FooBar2000 for tagging.

Your files have an id3v1 tag? or id3v2?

Yes, but how come dBpA doesn't report the nonexisting genre for files tagged with Mp3tag? That's what's confusing me.

I am not well experienced in FooBar. Just tried tagging with it and I don't see where to enter the info... SOrry. sad.gif

What info are you trying to add/remove and how? You select the files, right click, and "properties". There you can get rid of the tags you do not want and can edit them.

Got it now. Thanks. Writing tags is in Properties - I was looking under Tagging. wink.gif

Just noticed something else. If I select "blank" for Genre in ID3v1, while the file is playing in WinAmp, and update it - Genre field really disappears (from ID3v2 too).

It obviously has something to do with ID3v1 cos if I only use ID3v2 Genre doesn't come up. dry.gif
