Hi,

I have an album encoded with Flac 1.1.3, can I decompress this to WAV and re-encode with Flac 1.2.1 losslessly, as the rest of my albums are stored in Flac 1.2.1.

Thanks.

Yes, you definitely can! The new flac.exe encoder even allows for input file to be in flac format, i.e. you can easily re-encode without first decoding to wav:

flac.exe my.flac -o newer.flac

It may be worth taking a look at ReFlacer.

This may be a stupid question, but is there a good reason to do this?
I have my entire CD collection in FLAC, and it would take a long time to do this, so I just wonder if it is neccesary?

Newer FLAC version offers better compression ratio and lower cpu usage at playback - I think.

Certainly not necessary. 1.2.1 will compress better than 1.1.3, but I couldn't tell you how many MB you would save.

Personally, I would do it as part of a file check routine; i.e.: when you feel the need to verify all your files, re-encode at the same time.
