Full Version: Emu 0404 - can I have two analog outputs simultaneously?

Hi all,

I have an E-mu 0404 sound card. It has two pairs of mono 1/4 inch (6.3mm) sockets, one labelled IN and one labelled OUT. However there seem to be lots of rewiring options in the PatchMixer software so I was wondering if it's possible to change the software config so that the two pairs of sockets can be made into two simultaneous outputs.

I'm using Virtual DJ and what I want to do is do the 4.1 output with external mixer option, so I need two audio outputs. I would like to use two outputs on the same soundcard because when I use two soundcards I run into massive latency/skipping problems.

Is this not possible with the Emu 0404? Should I be looking at something like ASIO4ALL? I don't really understand the config application and the manual is very light on detail...!

Thanks in advance,

Dij

There is no way to turn the inputs into outputs. Possible you can output something different (from the analogue out) on the digital out, but you will need an external DAC to make use of that.

Andy-H-Ha is right. I would like to add that you don't need to clutter your system with ASIO for All, as E-MU supports ASIO itself. For 44/48 kHz there are 16 ASIO devices which could be routed to any outputs (if they were there).

Yeh fair enough. I just had the impression from other posts on here that you could mess with the routing of the channels to different physical ports with ASIO4ALL. Guess I'll be taking this card back and getting a new one. I love the jump in quality of this card. I have to admit that I didn't think I'd notice the difference.

Would the Emu 1616 meet my needs do you think? Seems to have lots of outputs on the external unit. However it's about 5 times the price...!

There are a great many soundcards with multiple output channels. The manufacturer's specs should tell the tale clearly enough, except for the fact that any digital output is often included in the count (e.g. S/PDIF out as one stereo pair). The digital outputs are real enough but do not provide analogue signals to drive amplifiers. That require an external DAC to convert the digital to analogue.
