What do you think it should show as free space? Which file system is it formatted with? What is the stated capacity of the pen drive?

If it is stated to be a 1GB pen drive, formatted with FAT, you might reasonably expect to see at least 954MiB of free space (1MiB = 1,048,576 bytes = 1.048576MB so 1GB = 1000MB= 954MiB = 0.9313GiB).

[edit] Sorry, I picked up the wrong end of this particular stick.... Search for the HP Drive Key Boot Utility (cp006049.exe) and it will format your drive (completely smile.gif) and make it bootable (as long as you put something like MS-DOS on it....) [/edit]

No, he said it shows 986 MB used when there are no files on it.

Have you checked for hidden or system files? Is it possible that there is a large block of bad sectors that are counted as used? Give us more information to work with.
