OK here goes. I have a couple songs that list more than one artist (e.g., the artist field contains "Ella Fitzgerald; Cole Porter"). Previously, when I sorted the album list by artist, both artists would show up in the list. In other words there would be an entry for Ella Fitzgerald and a separate entry for Cole Porter. And I liked that. But it doesn't happen anymore. Now the album list simply shows one entry: "Ella Fitzgerald, Cole Porter"

I don't know what I did to change this behavior but I noticed it happening after I enabled ID3v2 writer compatibility mode. So I tried disabling ID3v2 writer compatibility mode, but that didn't bring back my old artist list. Any clues how I can get my artist list to list each artist separately again?

May I ask you check whether $meta_num function returns 1 for those artist fields? If so you will need Masstagger Manage Script "Split multiple artist fields" action (this will split your artist field into multiple one by comma), or "Split field by separator" action (you need to enter ARTIST in field text box and , in separator text box for this action to work).
