Does anyone have this sound card? I am thinking about getting it. One thing I DON'T want is a sound that has a sound of being over-processed. Creative cards are real bad about that. Does anyone know if this one is free from that?
If you're just looking for 7.1, try a CMI8768 based card (circa £15 / $30) - Dogberts (free, non OEM) drivers work perfectly on it.
[edit] However, looking at the specs for the CMI8788 chipset based card, it looks *nice*. Not widely available (cheaply).... [/edit]
naw, i'm pretty set on this card. but i was just wondering if someone who had it could tell me in advance it's sound is good or if it has that over-process sound.

I have a similarly priced sound card, which is also based on the same C-Media codec- the Asus Xonar D2.
The differences are in the AD/DA converters used and the opamps used. Asus uses Burr-Brown converters for DA and Cirrus for AD- both boasting over 120dB S/N and very low distortion numbers.
The Asus is dead quiet and its sound quality is comparable with expensive SACD and DVD-A players. Definitely not processed sounding- unless you use the internal DSP effects that is.
The drivers are work in progress, but the card works OK for me using ASIO driver as well as in regular Windows XP default mode.
I would definitely recommend it as a high end computer sound solution.
