I did search for this before asking, by the way, but on my ubuntu server an updated version of mplayer plays past the end of the track. The track is over but the counter just keeps going.
Anyone know anything about this?

I dont know what happened with your ubuntu since I'm using debian.
You can try to install mplayer from sources http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html
It should be easy to install cause you have the dependecies alredy installed on your system.
