I suspect there is almost no audible difference between CD players that do not have an outright engineering defect. I doubt it would sound any different to most current CD players, but this is just a 'belief' that I have not tested. I have a cheap DVD player that is about 4 years old I could drag away from the TV and compare it to if you like but I do not have access to any recent manufacture CD players. I think my sons xbox 360 can play audio CD's so I could try that as well.

I hardly ever use my CD player any more. These days I just rip to 224kbps AAC and use the iPod. cool.gif

Hi. If you can it would be interesting to know the results of that comparison.

I have briefly compared two tracks, but don't think it is enough so I will try and do some more tomorrow. It has been an eventful day with distractions. Instead of being able to spend some time this evening as I had planned, my wife surprised me this afternoon with a ticket to see Bobby McFerrin this evening, which I only recently got back from ;-)

Incredible gig.

From the two tracks so far it is very close between the Yakumo el-cheapo DVD player and the iPod. If anything, I think the iPod might have a fractional edge, but don't quote me on that as I am not sure, thus my wanting to do some more listening. I might see if I can grab some passing offspring and ask their opinions as it would be nice to have a second opinion.

I am afraid I don't think I can do the Xbox-360 after all as I hadn't really thought it through when I mentioned it. I don't have a TV in the room with the HiFi so I couldn't really operate the 360 as required. The fan noise would probably mess things up as well. Sorry about that.

Ok. I ripped another 11min track in Apple lossless, balanced the volumes and synced the track on the iPod and DVD player. Before listening, I asked my son to listen and asked him to tell me if one sounded better than the other, or did they sound the same. I did not tell him what the sources were.

He said he couldn't hear a difference and that they sounded the same to him. He's 12, so his hearing should be intact.

Then I re-synced and listened for 11 min, switching back and forth between sources. I then used another CD and another ripped track. I could not hear any difference either.

My conclusion is that my moderately high end late 90's CD player = iPod and that the same applies for a 2004 el cheapo DVD player.

Hi. Thanks for your suggestion but I prefer to go for a cd player in that case. Also, you say the box goes for $300, which is the same as an ipod, but the ipod doesn't need a dac.

Actually, the Squeezebox doesn't need a DAC, it has RCA analog outputs. But it has digital outputs if you care to use your own DAC.
