I'm having issues burning a CD.

I did a simple drag/drop, and played the CD in the PC and it worked fine.

I also tried using NERO to burn, and it won't let me due to insufficient disc space.

So a couple of questions:

1) is NERO adding or manipulating the files when it burns them, so
that the file size increases ?

(The file size seems to increase quite a bit as it says it needs twice the
space that is on the disc)

2) If NERO is the issue, is there a better/simpler system to use than NERO?

I'm running Vista home premium.

What you are doing in the first case is copying MP3 files onto a data CD, which is playable on your PC, and in the second case you are requesting that NERO convert your MP3s to PCM (wav) and making an audio CD. The latter case only allows you to store 74 or 80 minutes worth of music where the former is many times that.

Also, is there a good/simple/basic shareware to use to copy/burn mp3's ?


The reason this all started was I originally did the drag/drop method
to burn the CD (which played fine on the PC) but when I went to
play it on my new dvd/cd player it wouldn't play.....

Note: the cd/dvd/ player does play other cd's with mp3 on them so
I know that it works, but those where done a while ago on another
computer.
So I though maybe the drag/drop method was to basic and that the player
needed some other settings or whatever on the mp3 files, which is why
I tried the whole NERO thing.....

Yes of course there is. It's so simple, if you choose an "Audio CD" compilation it will expand your mp3's to standard CDA (CD audio) format whereas if you choose a "Data CD" compilation then it will leave them as mp'3. This has been the standard behavior for CD authoring software since the year dot.

ImgBurn can handle both audio and data CDs. I'd recommend it over Nero (ugh) any day. Just be sure to disable the sound it plays when your burn is successful. That sample could really use some ReplayGain.

alternate download. I compared SHA512 hash with my known legit copy, and they are the same file.

as far as why one cd would play and another wouldn't there's a lot of things that can effect that, down to the very media which is used. but i would first have a look at how Nero is burning it. I suggest making sure for starters that it's burning it as DAO (Disk At Once) and that it's closing the index. (aka don't enable the option to add data/audio later)

I have yet to run into a single situation where failing to close a disc has led to an inability to play it.
