When I view the Properties dialog window of a .mp3 file, the second tab "Properties" has a "General" section and a Tool field. What tag is this field stored in? I want to write a new tag %ENCODER% based on it's contents but I can't figure out what tag the field is stored in.

Use %__tool% or $info(tool).

That didn't work. I tried adding that in a new field in Mp3Tag Editor and in the properties Panel in Foobar but the value wasn't populated using either approach. Any other ideas? If not, I'll have to randomly select blocks of tracks to figure out which use which LAME version.

I thought you wanted to display that value in the playlist where it does work. Now I'm confused about what exactly you are trying to do. Also note that MP3Tag is a different program and things may work differently than in foobar2000.
