And so I use Case's Tag.
Tag&Rename is... Hmmm... Commercial product.

I too use T&R - commercial or not, it was the best product I could find back when I was looking for a a tagging program that was better than WinAmp <g>. I have just heard about command line tag in the last week or so; I don't think it was around when I was searching so I picked (And bought) what worked for me.
With that said, I *like* the command-line tag, and I've found myself dropping to cmd prompt and using it more often. I don't foresee uninstalling T&R, but I do think that eventually tag.exe will be the main-usage. I've just got to learn the syntax and best uses, etc. I don't know it well enough to not refer to my 4 pages of printouts

MP3-Tag Studio is the way to go. It contains ads-but is not ad-ware. It does not steal bandwidth/data. Considering its price tag of $0.00, it is totally worth the investment. Try it. You won't need anything else. Download it
here.

I've used Tag&Rename exclusively for a while. The freeDB option is great when tagging albums. It's also an easy way to make sure all the songs were downloaded completely without listening to all of them.
Right now, I'm using T&R first, then Tag to wipe out ID3V2, preserve ID3V1, and add APE2, then finally the Foobar2000 beta to verify correct tags (& add disc numbers for multi disc sets) and add replaygain info.
Yes, that's right Foobar2000 is a tagger as well! And not a bad one at that!
Normal...
Foobar2000 mass tagging is based on Case's Tag...
I use Tag & Foobar2000 to tag my files...
woww a lot of replies

where I can download Case's Tag? I want to tryyy it

Case's Tag. You can find links to a couple of frontends as well, although there's so many options with Tag, you might want to check the command lines.
@ IrYoKu - you can find it here
http://www.saunalahti.fi/~cse/html/tag.html
but i have a question about tag
if the trackname is longer than 30 char. - tag creates automatically an idv1.x and a lyric3 v2 tag - is it save to use or should i delete this lyric tag for a proper file playing

?
thx for replies

Guys, the best mass tagger and mass renamer is called Flexible renamer. And now supports MPC! (Ver 7.0b) Note: Download it from the japanese site, English link is broken. Thanks NARU! (developer). Enjoy!

Tagger, IMHO the best Tag frontend there is.
I use
TAGSCANNERPretty Good prog ,Free,Good GUI,support IDtag (1.1 and 2.3) and Ogg Tag
I don't need APEv2 'cause Ogg Tag is enough for me

I don't want to pay for T&R

I had previously removed all tagging from my MP3's. I had been reading about the current hard drive MP3 players and the need for tags for sorting through the music for playlists. Is there a freeware program that can automate mass tagging as I have my MP3's named by "Artist - Track Name"? Further, can this program also add Genre and tag versions 1 and 2?

Tag would do it. Just use --auto. Or you can manually set the scheme. It will tag your entire collection in minutes. (Or seconds.)

Why don't people like id3 v2? I find that it can help with longer file names (at least I have had problems on Winamp with longer names and id3 v1). Just wondering.

I think there has been plenty of discussion in the past about this. Try searching this forum or elsewhere online. I haven't read a lot about it, but I think developers are not happy with the way the tag are coded. I agree that the long fields are very helpful for ID3V2, but since I've started using Foobar, it seems like APEV2 fulfills all my tag needs and more (ReplayGain).

By the waym who is the girl (you avarar). She is very sexy man! I think that Tag & Rename is the way, I just downloaded the 3.04 Beta version, is a pretty piece of software, I love the "allmusicguide" support, it's hepful with albums and singles, and supports mpc too, but not ape2 yet, AFAIK in the v.3.00 stable will do (ape2 support).-

Tag&Rename here. It does MP3, MPC, OGG and WMA nicely. IMO worth every penny for the freedb and allmusic.com based tagging.

plain tag.exe , no doubts B)
I am a user of tag&rename but it lacks of support of ape2 tags for mp3, and thats what I need for foobar2000. The new version of tagger supports freedb, and it is an important thing for me. Allmusicguide is good but I think is a paid service for software like tag&rename.

I just use ID3v2 and the foobar v2 plugin. Seems to work fine for me. Also I'm not sure what you mean by Allmusic, as its simply an alternative database Tag&Rename uses for ID3 info as well as album art and reviews.
Foobar2000 here. It has the highest features/bloat ratio of any program I've used. Evar. And it does every trick I need or want from tagging. Arbitrary tags, an incredible display formatting scripting language, a powerful (although not necessarily the most streamlined) tag editor, a database for formats which do not intrinsically allow for certain data, et cetera.
Foobar2000: all your tag are belong to it.
Here's what I used to use:
Dr.Tag - the best stuff for MP3s. Slightly buggy, but
very powerful. I managed to sort a 20 Gb collection of MP3s with it in just a couple of hours (lots files renamed incorrectly, no tags and so on...)
Tag&Rename - crap IMO. instead I use it's more powerful clone, Abander Tagcontrol www.softartstudio.com, the best multiformat tool I know. It's main disadvantage (for me): a lack of APE 2 tags.
TAG... not bad, but... Foobar 2000 is a better choice, IMHO

I don't want any other frontend

Tagscanner - so-so... Usability is not very high...
PZ Tageditor - one of the best editors for MP3s I know

MPTagger - crap.
ID3 Master - very outdated.
Ultratagger - nice looking, but useless.

Tag&Rename, because it has support of AMG! I cannot use freedb because I use wavtrim

, "Leave Out Gaps" in EAC and "remove digital silance" in EAC... But currently I use Tag+Tag Frontend and Foobar... Cause T&R don't have support of APEv2 tags for mp3 yet
As for tagging AND Renaming (these things are always connected) T&R is the best, IMO.

As soon as T&R supports APE2 on MP3s, I'll switch back to it. I really like the GUI and the AMG feature is great.

ditto, though some of the resource problems I get with this program drawing when I am using it along with other intensive stuff can be annoying. It is still a great program, I love the batch features of course.
I use other software for tags other than mp3...for instance, I am starting to use Tag for my FLACs...
